Pedigree dogs
MickR was right -this deserves its own thread-specilized dogs have certian purpases, and that should not be forgotten, too many people and children have been hurt because someone likes the way a dog looks without knowing what it was bread for-and that can bee a real problem, dont buy a dog for looks, find out what it has beenespcially bread for, this can stop a lot of headaches and miserable animals. One other thing Hybreds arent pedigree dogs, they are mutts, and drive the price of real pedigrees way up,and always check out your breeder, espcally if its a strong breed-pits,mastiffs,dobies etc, they can do real damage and cause you real miserey. Just my two cents

I've been in love with Dobbies for as long as I can remember and have done a lot of research on them, it's a shame what a lot of the American "breeders" did in the 90's to them.

I often joke that we've got the whole allergy medication commercial (remember the ones with the pugs and boston terriers?). We've got one of each, though they're not likely to hurt anything (maybe a sofa cushion). With the bug-eyed dogs, the big problem is constant eye problems. But we love 'em anyway.
There are many roads to sharp.

Thanked: 13246Oddly enough as a Kid we always had Pound Puppies and they were healthy long lived dogs,,, But as soon as I bought "my" first dog I went for pure breeds with papers
I have owned a Keeshond, Terrible barker, way to smart for his own good
2 King Chows this is the large boned 100 pound plus dog the bitches run 65 plus we had a Male Cinnamon and a Female Cream great dogs but very very protective of the family...
A Wakon Blood line Malamute 32 inches at the shoulder and 148 pounds a huge lovable bear never needed a leash unless it was the law of the land...
and now the two 100 mile per hour Japanese Shiba Inu that allow us the live in their house

I've had pure breeds only.
I spent a lot of time selecting all of them.
Well the entire family did.
We wanted docile and big.
First we had 3 Bullmastiffs, then we went for a couple Great Danes.
All rather large, with the biggest being well over 170 pounds and standing well over 2 meters on his hind legs.
Big, gullible, lazy and thick as bread the lot of them
Not a single aggressive bone in any of them, although Harley, the biggest Dane, Often mistook the neighbors Rottweiler for a NylaboneLast edited by Birnando; 06-16-2011 at 07:54 PM.

Family friends used to have a Bullmastiff and I loved that dog. As you said, big, gullible, lazy, and one of the most peaceful dogs I've ever met.

Thanked: 1936I love Bullies, Chow Chows, German Shepherds and my mother loves Dobies. I agree that many so called breeders have really hurt a lot of people and the breeds itself. Many unscrupulous people just see a dollar versus a companion or trying to better the breed. I'm currently with GSD's and love them! I agree 110% that the research should be done on the breed as well as the breeder as you can go wayyyy wrong if you don't. I spayed my Chow Chow as soon as she started to show signs of hip problems that only got worse as she aged. I just didn't want to pass a problem on to someone else. She was a great dog that lived 13 wonderful years...she was my greatest friend & companion.

Do yourself a favor and spend just as much time checking out the breeder as the breed. Our jack we'd bought from a poor breeder we should have done more research on. It's got temperament problems, weight problems, allergy problems (seriously what dog is allergic to grass). Overall not good, once we found all these problems we had him fixed asap. I also love German Shepards, Bull Mastiffs and Great Danes. I know a Shepard won't be practical for a long time (uncle had one said the hair was impossible to get out of his uniform). And havnt had enough experience or research on the other two. So my first do (not my parents) will be a Dobbie.

Nice dogs, but I have always wanted a Dane but I had a delima with giving my heary to a dog that has a limited lifespan. 8-10,correct? I love them anyway just couldnt6 own one.
As for breeders check them out with the AKC,also if they want you to give referances its pesty but shows that they care where there dogs are going, To get my last couple of dibies it was like adopting a child, and thats a good thing, the breed was almost ruined by over breeding in the 70s by dopes who got two dogs and called themselves breeders. But these nuts with the hybreds are crazy, paying over $1000 for dogs that used to be given away,go figure?Last edited by Grizzley1; 06-17-2011 at 12:18 AM.
