    Default Whips

    Howdy gentlemen!

I figured a few of us were talking about bullwhips in the combat knives thread and thought I'd start a new thread.

I got into the thought of having bullwhips like everyone else I know which is by watching Indiana jones!

Lol that being said I never gave it a real thought until a few weeks ago where I started looking more into it.

Long story short ended up getting a Joseph Strain 12 plait 7 foot bullwhip.

So does anyone else have some that they would like to share?

I'll start it off here is my new toy:

I have considered getting a real (not one of the junk ones) hand woven whip like you just posted a pic of in the past. I'm not sure what I would use it for, but I do think they are quite cool! Where can you find good ones for sale at out of curiosity?

    I got mine from notherwhipco.com

The man who makes the whips is joseph strain. He has supplied his whips for the Indiana jones movies and many more. He is teaching his eldest son how to make whips and offers those up for sale for a very good deal.

That being said you can find so many whip makers it's just what you are willing to pay for.

I am wondering what do you do with these whips. How do you use them? How do you have fun with them?

As a kid I always wanted a whip but my parents told me that I'd probably put my eye out. Now I am at the age where, although I still want a whip, I know for a fact that I'd probably put my eye out. Still would be fun though.

I remember, years ago when I worked as a wild animal tamer at the circus after a long hot day whipping the creatures we's get together with the folks on the carny side and get out our whips and speedos and...err...

The working stockmen I have spoken to in Australia have all said that kangaroo leather is the best leather for whips. Kangaroos don't sweat so the leather is finer grained and doesn't have pores in it which makes it a more supple leather but with very good tensile strength.

It's a great leather for whips and just about anything else. That being said it's a hard to get leather out of Australia so it can make things more expensive.

Out of curiosity (yes, still curious), what is the price range for a hand woven whip? What size is good for a beginner or just anyone...I know absolutely nothing about them other than they are cool.
