I believe Luke Skywalker went through much the same thing. Except he got a cool bionic arm out of it...
My father is a licensed boiler operator/technician and a few years back he was making some repairs and somehow he ended up with a slice right through the tendon on his thumb, kind of right between the web of his hand. He was in a cast for a bit and it's healed up fine. He still fly fishes to beat the band.

I'm sorry to hear that happened; especially to someone so young.
I haven't had that bad of an accident at once.
I've broken plenty of bones, stabbed myself though both palms and one wrist, a fair number of serious burns and smashed them all to bits.
Through all of that my hands always heal well. I do have a few scars, but nothing readily visible without a second look.
I do have quite a bit of mobility trouble from arthritis and scar tissue, but I get by just fine while tying flies, shaving, dissecting cadavers and even turning extremely small objects on my lathes.

Thanked: 1371You'll be healed up and good to go in time for deer season.
Just be more careful with the grinder in the future.

About 15 years ago my right hand thumb was almost cut off in an accident. Bone and tendon was cut nicely and only tiny piece of skin and flesh kept it from falling off. Doctors put it back; it was quite painful for few weeks and nowadays it is just normal. The only difference is decreased sense of touch. Not much but enough to tell the difference. It is sometimes difficult to open my shirt buttons etc.

Thanked: 7I had a slight altercation with my table saw a week ago last Tuesday. I managed to take off a cashew sized piece of the right thumb ( it's over on my bench) and gurf up my right index and middle finger. My orthopedic surgeon did a beautiful job of folding the skin over and securing it so that I did not loose the end of the thumb or the nail, although I gave him permission to take the stub down to the knuckle. The fingers will heal nicely, but the thumb may give me a little trouble pushing sandpaper on razors. The human body is an amazing machine and I'm anxious to see how I am going to accommodate for the loss. Now, for the really amazing part...I straight shaved left-handed the day after the incident and came up with a BBS shave! I have only been straight razor shaving for about a month now and have always shaved right handed. I wear a goatee and had to make some pretty interesting gyrations but I got the job done with flying colors! Don't worry about your finger...you'll heal nicely and you still have the ability to grip things as you normally would. Good luck and heal quickly.

I've had hand surgery where the knuckles and bones had to be repaired with pins and rods. My hand was in bandages for almost 5 months. After there was rehab. In the end my hand works fine except that I cannot make a complete fist with my pinky and ring finger. Almost a tight fist but not quite.
The Dr. did a great job and I'm happy with his work. I wish you the best of health and a complete rehab.“Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe.”

Thanked: 485I was thinking about polishing on a grinder a few weeks ago and having horrible thoughts about massive W&Bs flying through the air and slicing in to me. I think you've helped me make up my mind to definitly NOT go near a grinder. My tool skills are extremely limited! I hope you make a good recovery. It'll be hard to have the guts to use the grinder again!!
