Any airtight container will keep tobacco well.

Bulldogs and Bent Bulldogs provide great smokes. The only problem I've had
with them was that they are thin at the lower walls. If you're careful this is
not a problem. If you smoke it hot too long and too much you risk burnouts.
All that is required to avoid this is careful smoking. Dunhill made ODAs in shapes
838 and 839 that were fine smokes.

I don't have any mason jars, but I do have some of those spring-latch jars with the rubber gasket on the lid. I think I'll use those until I start accumulating more tobacco, at which point the mason jar option sounds great!

Here's just an example of various bowl sizes. 2 little Petersons, clay and huge Lorenzo

How long of a smoke do you get out of each of those guys? Once I learned to pack a bowl properly, I realized that pipes will smoke for an astoundingly long time. Even my little one could probably go for an hour, maybe even more (although I've never smoked it that long). Pretty economical compared to cigars, at least with the tobacco I buy.

It depends a lot about the tobacco you smoke and how you pack it. Flakes will last much longer unless you rub them out. Fine cuts will go faster. There are also several methods of packing a pipe, some methods will produce faster smokes.
I've tried not to take it too overcomplicated and scientific. I just fold the flakes and stuff them into bowl. With finer cuts i fill the bowl, press it down to half or 2/3, fill and press some more and go.
Lorenzo with folded flakes will last very long. At least an hour. Perfect partner when walking the dogs.

Ok, here's another question for you guys:

I've decided that the best thing to do with my current pipe once I receive my new one (thanks again to 1OldGI) is to send it to a cousin of mine. I recently bought him a straight razor as a gift and since then he loves using it. He enjoys smoking cigars, and given his personality I'm pretty sure he'll enjoy pipes as well.

My question is, how can I clean/sanitize the mouthpiece before I send it to him? I haven't used the pipe enough to warrant cleaning the bowl, it's actually probably just now broken in. But I do want to clean the mouthpiece for him before I send it.

A quick wipe down with an alcohol swab should do it, but you can get pipe cleaning products from a good tobacconist or online.

No that pistol isn't the only thing under my kilt, but I can tell you both of them work just fine

Couldn't help but notice this wonderful thread and thought I might join in.I love bent bulldogs and stubby quarter bent pocket type pipes.I love rustics and just recently learned they are supposed to be cooler smokers because the wood is more porous. This is only what I have read.Supposedly, rustics are made from wood with imperfections so they(the makers)sandblast'em which gives'em that neat pebbley look. I too keep my tobacco in the smaller squat sized mason jars.I buy the reusable plastic lids which work great. You can get the lids out of Lehmans non electric catalog or Lehmmans.com. they come in both wide mouth or small mouth Also..thanks for the sanitizing info Mick. I got a Peterson long bent Military a Viking Billard and a Viking slight bent that I may think about selling. All have little use but I want to start getting more into Bulldogs and Rhodesians. Good thread, good info !!
