I'm different, I don't use filters, smoke aromatics AND inhale (every third puff...OCD perhaps? ) Each person works out what suits them best. Like many things, it's trial and error until you decide what works for you.
I prefer a bent to a straight as it (mostly) keeps all the nasty tasting moisture at the bottom. In a Peterson system it holds that yuck in a small reservoir that is easily cleaned and dried with something like paper kitchen towel, or my most recently favoured method, is to roll a few pieces of toilet paper, twist it up to form a screw, screw it into the reservoir to clean, remove, then flush it away (The wife was complaining of the bin smelling like an ashtray). Pipe cleaners, those fluffy/prickly things that you pass through the stem, go straight into an outside bin.

I don't care for filters myself, but I guess it's just a purist type of thing . But if I was such a purist, then I break that by preferring aromatics.Right now I like a blend called Navigator which is all dark tobaccos,my style is fairly even, slow, contemplative puffs . I have a Peterson system pipe like Micks and he is correct in that they are wonderful. They are very cool smokes with almost Nill tongue bite .....unless you are the Mad Hatter of pipe smokers. Well worth the investment . Good piping to you sir .

Are tobacco pipe filters those little mesh discs I've seen? Or are we talking something more elaborate here? Because it doesn't seem to me that the mesh would do much of anything at all, except maybe keep little bits from flying into your mouth (I don't think that's ever even happened to me before).

zapp, filters are sometimes just like the ones on the ends of cigarettes or I think Savinelli has a balsa wood type filter. The mesh disk you are referring to is something to keep ash from traveling up the stem (from what I've read).

I would definitely take 1OldGI up on his offer. Kaywoodie's are great pipes.

There are two online pipe vendors I have purchased pipes from. They are Cup O' Joes and Smoking Pipes.com. The pipes they sell may be pricey, but they are worth every penny imho.

I did! He's a very generous dude, and in return I'll pass on the favor by spreading the pipe smoking hobby (along with my old pipe) to others.

With the filter, the stem come apart from the bowl and you insert what ever filter it takes. Some use Balsa wood, others us cardboard. If your not smoking really harsh aromatics or planning on using a crappy pipe, with the Dr. Garbow pipes theyre a must, dont worry about them.
No that pistol isn't the only thing under my kilt, but I can tell you both of them work just fine

Here's another question for the group: I'm hearing a bit about not using a wide variety of tobaccos in the same pipe, as the flavors will begin to blend. What's everyone's thoughts on this? I don't smoke pipes terribly often (definitely not daily, just when I'm kicking back to relax) so maybe it wouldn't be a huge issue for me. Then again, if this is the standard practice, would having 2 pipes suffice, one for aromatic and one for English?

    Thanks guys

That's what the shop owner explained to me when I bought my first Peterson pipe. He said you should dedicate your pipe to either aromatic or no, otherwise it could start taking on a funky taste that is not reversible .

It can be reversed, but will take alcohol to clean it (I use makers mark) and alot bland tobacco like cavendesh smoked through it for like a week (depends on how funky you made the bowl). Has worked for me in the past. Just sayin
