Luminox uses the Tritium Capsules for lume. They are the brightest lume source you can get these days. The only drawback is the tritium has a half-life of 9years so if you are buying a watch for the long haul probably at the 15 year mark most of the lume will be gone.

I recently got into manual wind watches, I love their simplicity. Loving my vintage Cartier tank.

they have a 25 year warranty on the trillium lume. I have no idea it the rest of the watch will make the nine year mark. I think even if it only keeps me happy for nine years it will be money well spent. With my work watches take a serious beating.

I usually wear long sleeves. The glow in the dark feature for any watch I have owned has always been a joke to me1

If you are just beyond the halflife, shouldn't you be at about half the brightness? Or is the concentration of tritium not directly proportional to the brightness?

Yes it is but there are two factors; one is the loss of illumination is so gradual you would not notice it unless you put it next to a new one and two the lume is so bright to begin with even with a 50% loss it is still pretty bright.

Another thing is the half life isn't from when you buy the watch it's from when the compound is produced which can be a year or two or more earlier.

Bulova and Seiko... I really should branch out to some more exotix pieces. Too many expensive hobbies already though...

I can say that out on the water at night doing medical calls the watch rocks. I have not seen another watch with the same level of illumination. It appears to take a bit of a beating as well. I don't think it is a suit and tie watch but if you are wearing a dry suit in a rubber boat at night...

They can give a 25 year guarantee because few who buy those watches will keep them for that long a period of time. Ball watch has an unlimited guarantee on their lume capsules but of course their watches are usually a couple grand or more.

The only way to make good on the guarantee is to replace the entire face of the watch.
