The power reserve indicator or up down indicator was a complication used mostly in pocket watches. In the early 20th century when a watch was bought by its components that was around a $40 option.
It's more rare on wrist watches. It never was very accurate, more a style thing.
It works through gearing connected to the ratchet wheel on top of the barrel which contains the mainspring. It has a catch so when you wind the watch it moves and when you stop or it's fully wound the catch disengages it until the wind starts again either up or down.No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero
