Basically a channel is cut and then undercut to create a sort of dovetail. Mine in cross section looks like a dovetail with a forcing cone in the bottom. I do this to make sure the gold wire completely fills the inlay channel. Once the channel is ready I take a gold wire fitted to the channel, anneal it and hammer it in using a brass punch and hammer. Then the excess is cut and stoned flush with the surface of the steel.

I would love to see a before and after shot. I find it very annoying that I don't own any nicely blued handguns.

I own that same Colt (I inherited it from my late grandfather), I wish mine looked as clean as that!
