Stinkin installation tool is $300+ no matter if you get gunsmith rates or not.
For future reference, you really don't need the over-priced Trijicon tool to install their sights. This Brownell's tool will do the job just as well, and at less than a fifth of the price.

PS: If you don't mind my asking, how much is Trijicon charging you, and what's their turnaround time?

I appreciate the information, however that is just part of the stuff needed. If you read the description it is just part of the equation. Looking 2-3 weeks with the holidays on us. No worries, I have my other toys to keep me safe. Should be around $45.00.

If you want some serious mods, you could always opt for "The Meltdown" package from Clark Custom Guns in Loiusiana. My off-duty concealed carry weapon is a Kimber Custom II. I had them do a meltdown on it. They also checkered the front strap and the underside of the slide-lock so it could be locked back easier to clear a jam in a hurry. I installed Novak Ghost Sights with trijicon inserts and had the frame milled down around the grip safety area for an Ed Brown grip safety to allow a higher, tighter grip. The meltdown is the biggest change though. It's almost as if someone microwaved chocolate long enough to soften any rough edges. It's a great mod for a concealed carry weapon especially since I carry it in a custom made IWB holster most of the time.

My dad used to shoot with Jerry (the owner's son in law). He's always said he wants one.
No that pistol isn't the only thing under my kilt, but I can tell you both of them work just fine

Don't feel bad. I picked up an M&P 9c on Friday and was planning on installing night sights myself (the Bowie Tactical classics). Got to talking to a fellow at the LGS and he said they'll install Glock sights for free. 30 bucks for the M&P because it's a b!tch to get the sights off. Could take 5 minutes. Could take 30. All depends on what was going on in Springfield that day.

Thanks for the info. Seems like a fair price on the installation. I've seen local smiths here in AZ charge $60 on installing Glock sights, which are much easier. That may have helped push me in the DIY direction...

For your 1911 front sight, apart from the staking tool, you do need a dremel with a small grinder. For the rear, just a brass drift and a hammer.

I'm a straight razor guy, of course I have a dremel...matter of a fact I have two. I'm a major DIY'r & it was how I first got into AR-15's & doing trigger jobs. For some reason I love the design, next one will be in 6.8spc.

6.8 spc is an impressive round. Couple of years ago, I had a Robinson Arms XCR in 5.56 and almost got the 6.8 conversion kit for it, but ended up selling that rifle and focusing on the AK platform instead. Still, wouldn't mind a nice 6.8 in the line-up. I think LWRC has done some awesome work in that caliber...

Sooo... Got any recommendations for a .223 AK that won't break the bank? I'd be ok with an AR but the price point is above me and if I really cared about tight groupings I'd buy a bolt action.
I've been eyeing the Saiga because I'm a cheap bastard and I've seen some decent groupings off it. It's going to be a just for fun/fur bearers. Coyotes and wild dogs, mostly. I want a semi-auto because around here you can't stay super far away and the wild dogs usually run in packs of 5+. And I'm a scaredy cat.

Yeah, gotta be prepared for those wild dog packs!

Anyway, all my AK stuff is in 7.62 x39. Either .223 Saigas, or WASR-3s seem to be the way to go in that caliber. I have not looked into prices much lately. I have heard that the AK in .223 can be less reliable due to the non-tapered casing of the round, and that it might be better to stick with the AR platform in .223.

Unless you're really committed to .223 / 5.56, another option to consider would be an AK-74 in 5.45. Cheap and plentiful ammo (for now ), and a decent rifle from e.g. Century for $400...

If you want to read more, there is a forum called Warriortalk that includes an extensive section on all aspects of the AK... Here's a sample thread related to your question.
