I'm pretty unhappy with country music these days. Back in the old days there was a lot of great songwriters and artists. Hank Jr was always rubbish and he was the beginning of the end of Country Music as far as I'm concerned. Now we have Hick-Hop and music that is indistuingishable from the worst of pop music except for the southern accent of the singer. That isn't country music by a long shot.

Of course, everyone likes Johnny Cash and Hank Sr.. I was also a big fan of Bobby Bear and some of his group, too. Someone who doesn't get nearly enough recognition is John Prine, though. He has written some excellent stuff, and he's still performing, too. Good country music is about how the songwriter feels, great country music is when the songwriter can tell you about how you feel.

And this is another. It has some good pickin' and it's a beautiful song too.

I only liked Cash from when what he did was more blues than country. I think slow blues is more fit to communicate deep thought / reflection than fast country music like might be played at a fair.
    Country's just not my thing.

I'd call this blues, more than country, no?

That's more gospel than blues, even though the two are related. Blues is very different, as well as gospel. That Johnny Cash video, while really good, only touches on a few of the facets of both types of music. It has also been put through the filter of Hollywood in what they consider blues and gospel. Sadly, late era Johnny Cash has been picked over by vultures and is hardly representative of his true music and influence on American music.
