    Default Singleshot firearms

Over the past 30+ years I have gone from a strong begining in paramilitary weapons to a reverse tech down to the single shot. Single shots have dominated my interests now for about 20 years to a point now that all but a couple are all single shots.

I was wondering if outhers out there are as taken by this style of shooting, yes muzzleloaders count

When I discovered the Thompson Center Contender in .223 back in the mid 80's I was hooked, that darn thing outshot all my other rifles. As I tried out more and more barrels I found myself selling off other rifles to get more barrels and frames. Once the T/C Encore was again legal in CA I imediently bought one in 450 marlin and loved it, but later sold that Bbl to convert the Encore to a rifle in 308win.

Over the years I have had tubes in...

    .17hrm
    .22LR
    .223rem
    6.5tcu
    .30-30
    .338/06
    .35rem
    .375JDJ
    45/70
    450marlin

these are the ones I remember off the top of my head, so my that I have tried and moved on before they had time to regester. Now days I don't even look at other weapon systems because I have had nothing but great luck with these shooters.

Today I only have a few Bbls and frames left, hard times weeded out anything I didn't NEED or would be parted with. My .375JDJ Bbl I had custom made back in 1989 while living in AK, this tube will live with me forever... it's comming with me....

It's just long enough to compensate for the muzzle break and hook up with rifle stocks, but only in case local laws prohibit pistol hunting.

    Some more configurations...

I have always wanted to try those. What's the range and accuracy.

Interesting. Largest I've shot has been a 30-06. No real need in my area for anything larger. Thought about a 40-70 but aside from having for the sake of having didn't see a use for it.

Ruger #1 in .458 win.mag, fun to shoot and re-load for,I think the free recoil was something like 105 lbs,a real bruiser for sure.

Depending on individual... I can keep a 2-3" group at 400yds with the .223. It's more important to limit the shot based on caliber and terrain. My 375JDJ rocks out to 250yds and holds a good 2" at that range after that the drop is just nuts. My 45-70 was the best darn 100yd sledge hammer. It all fell down flat after getting tapped byt that bugger LOL. But it was not much different than my 375 so it went away.

With CA's no lead laws this Bbl may have seen it's last hunting season. I can't get the brass bullet up fast enough to open while keeping pressures in the sane zone. About the same with the 6.5tcu. I'm still looking for a round that will work for me but doubt the contender will go hunting much while I life here...

But that is why I have the 308. It handles the factory brass bullets so far but I want to reload my own and just haven't had the time lately.

The 450 marlin with 450gr slugs liked to push the grip a bit lol. Not as bad as a light rifle with the Win Mag LOL my 458 was a heavy bugger that I sold in AK.

OK, I'll admit to having owned and shot with a 54 cal Hawken and a Crowning B78 in 7mm Rem mag. Never did get a TC as interesting as they are. A buddy had a Ruger #1 in 458 Win mag and I would agree that it was a ripper in the recoil department. I much preferred to shoot the 375 H&H Brno ZKK602 I had at the time.

Of the singles, I really enjoyed the 54 cal smokepole the most. Totally different shooting experience and very relaxing.

I was a huge fan of the Encore for years, very accurate in the barrels I had: .308, 7mm remington magnum, .223, .22-250. I just faded back to the bolt guns for some reason and am not sure why to be honest. I tried a few different pistol barrels for my Encore and they were as accurate as most quality rifles. If I missed my target it was shooter error, not the rifle/pistol. The .50 blackpowder barrel with three pyrodex pellets was as 1moa accurate at 100 yds any day of the week for as many rounds as you wanted to put down range.
