    Default Hand written letters

I was talking to some of my students today about methods of communication, these are teenagers who find email to be slow because it is a one person at a time communication. Anyway, I said what about hand written letters. They just looked at me as if I had suggested that people should communicate via smoke signals.

I feel sorry for these students because they may never know the joy of recieving a hand written letter.

The thought that some one has taken the time to pen some thoughts, the physicality of the paper and envelope, and thepersonality that goes into a hand written letter are some of the things that make receiving a letter one of the finer things in life.

I think that many people today would benefit from slowing down and taking the time to pen a letter.

I think prison correspondence is probably the last vestige of the hand written letter tradition. Sadly.

What have you got against smoke signals?

Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government.

My FIL often frequents a storage unit and often "collects" (dumpster dives) there. He found recently a box of old letters from a wife and mother to their husband/son who was fighting in WW2. I read them to my 3 kids and the FIL and my wife. We tried to instill in the children that "this is how it used to be done". A couple times I got choked up reading and sensing the fears of a family and nation. Also in the box were medals, ribbons and miltary paperwork. How someone could throw out family items like that is beyond me. We are dimished with the onset of technology to a degree.

I still write the odd letter, mostly with pen and ink, have always been keen on hand writing, but unfortunately found even my handwriting is deteriorating because of mostly typing on key boards. To keep my hand in I write to people who appreciate a hand written letter. I guess the way things are the new generations coming through may only be able to sight their names at best !!

Here in Bangkok it would be like writing with black ink of black paper.

This is another reason I just bought my first manual typewriter. As much as I love my gadgets, I feel that we've lost something tactile in our communication.

And I love when a guy who calls himself "shooter" wants to meet "face to face". Ominous!
