So sitting at my desk this afternoon, fountain pen in hand an hour and a half just slipped away. To me it feels like creating art and then sending it out into the world. For pen-friends who are geeky enough I use cross-hatch writing, for others just cursive.
So are there any other letter writers among us? Anyone else get twitchy when they go for more than a few days without touching pen to paper?

I like to write letters, but I don't feel that high level of need to do so. So long as I can write or draw anything I'm happy. It doesn't have to be placed into an envelope and have a stamp put on it to satisfy me.

I'm a big fan of hand-written letters - wonderful things. It means that the writer really took some time and effort and thought over what they wanted to say. I like to use an old-fashioned fountain pen - it has a civilizing influence, in the same way that putting on a tuxedo does!
I saw this TV series once, where modern 'lads' (awful) had to do 1950s style national service. Very funny. Anyway - in one episode, I remember that they were all made to sit down at a table and write a letter to their girlfriends. Several of them got very emotional over it, strangely enough (and these were big guys, if you know what I mean). The simple act of having to really think about what they wanted to communicate, obviously in many cases for the first time, was a new experience.
I'm an editor, as it happens, so I know that taking real care over what you are writing is a dying art. Real ink smells a certain way, but I'm not sure how many people know it any more.

This thread has made me decide to write my old granny a letter this evening!

    (Rant over.)

i do like writing letters, as some of you will know
i started as an exercise to improve my handwriting, and found peoples reactions to be pleasing, i think hand writing a letter is a more personal way of telling someone something than simply emailing.
as i work away i was sending my wife and daughter a letter each time i was at work, i stopped recently simply because i have nothing new to say, i know that they have both kept the letter that i did send though. i enjoyed using different inks and nibs, including drawings etc.

Maybe hand write them all a letter and mail it to them? Just a thought.

I write my sister all the time, she laughs and calls it " snail mail"! Everybody would rather e-mail & text nowadays, I miss the days when there were no cell phones.

That's rare these days, and commendable! I'm jealous. I need my cell phone for work and such, but I remember a time when if you wanted to talk to somebody, you found them face to face, or used a land line or pay phone. If you couldn't get a hold of them that way, you'd write them a letter!
