I used to play in a local league, and after years of effort, I'm proud to say I was mediocre at the game.

A friend of mine plays a lot online, at GameKnot, but I've never really got on with online chess.

There's a book which really helped me, "Winning Chess" by Chernev and Reinfeld. Its a set of positions from real games, and you look for the winning move, which is given and explained on the following page. Once you understand what the basic tactical ideas are (forks, pins, discovered attacks...) this book shows you how to see opportunities to set them up. Can't recommend it highly enough.

I have chess on my PDA and iPhone, so I can play anywhere I find myself waiting with nothing to do.

100% true with finding the opponent these days. I'm lucky as my family and some of my work mates play chess. I've tried to teach my kids that ftf gaming is not only fun by itself but also very good way for a family to spend their time together.
I wonder if people play letter chess (via email) these days.

Seems that as soon as online gaming, video games and all that become popular ftf board gaming became so old school. It's a shame, imho.

Love it but suck at it!

I'm also in love with the game if Go, but in this, too, I rival Hoover and Electrolux. Give me a trivia game and it's a whole different thing

Yes, well learning chess is like learning to shave with a cut throat, practice makes perfect. e-mail chess was before i had discovered the net. I do remember reading that some folk used to play chess by snail mail. Maybe we should get something going here? I am running linux so am limited in software choices on many sites.
