Excellent ! Mine is a monstrous looking thing (think Frankenstein) but cheap and it works. I got more invested in contact wheels than the grinder itself. I still have to come up with a shift on the fly mechanism before I build a new one. I like the idea of laying in front of the TV and grinding razors though. Cool plan.

NICE work. As for the "bench" yeah, it might be short, but you don't have to worry much about dust collection.

    Nice!
Did you get the bearings and drive shaft from KMG or someplace else?

I got the step pulleys from KMG. I had the pillow blocks in my junk collection and I ordered the shaft locally. I finished the platen and work table yesterday. Now I need some bigger contact wheels and I think it's done.

USA Knife makers has plastic contact wheels at a reasonable price - won't last as long as KMG wheels, but for most of us part timers that is not a problem. One trick that works well is to put a 2 inch wheel at the top of your flat platten setup. That way you can grind two ways with one attachment. I wish you well on your journey.

Personally, the wheels would be the one thing I would advise you not to skimp on. A trued and flat wheel will have a noticeable effect on grinding and improve the visual quality of your work.
    They also make less noise.

The larger USA Knifemaker wheels are not low quality. items The reason that they are less money is that the hubs are machined out less than the factory KMG wheels and they weigh more. I have both brands including an 8 inch from USA and am happy with the performance of all of them.
