    I do the same, but in a gas forge. I also put a piece of charcoal in the end of the pipe to keep a reducing atmosphere in the pipe. I get no scale at all.

    Caution: Do not try the charcoal trick in an oven as CO is a fuel and could cause an explosion!

    I coat the whole blade does not interfere with heat treat now I just finish grind the blade down to 15 micron belts and buff all done.
