Default This ATP high temperature coating works great

Just tried this coating today WOW the blade comes out of the oven just like it went in no pits or scale and the coating came off when I quenched. I love it, lots less hand sanding. All you do is wash the blade down with mineral spirits brush on the coating let it dry put your piece in the heat treat oven and magic.

I don't get it. Are you saying that you heat treated a hollow ground razor? Because if not, what good is a coating if you need to do further grinding anyway?

Yes, It saves me hand sanding on hardened steel I don't have to take it back to 220 grit I am able to start at 600 grit on everything but the hollow and on my final grind on the hollow I can use 320 and go up. I just hate hand sanding anything I can do to eliminate some is a winner for me.

The only way I can see this working is if you make near wedges. Because anything hollow will cool below critical in less than the time needed to go from the fire to the quench.

Bruno, I think what Pat is saying is that he can finish his post HT grinding on the blade at 320 grit so the finish sanding on the blade is no different that not using the high temp mask. Where it saves him sanding hardened steel is on the tang.

    Hey Pat,☺

So your doing the rough grinding, including the shaping and tapering of the tang.
The razor now has a preliminary hollow grind.
How much of the razor is being coated?
All? If you are applying the ATP to the entire razor does that interfere with the heat treat?
I understand the desire to minimize the damage done to the surface of the razor from heat treating and tempering.

Ah ok. In that case I understand.
I found that heating in an iron pipe also prevents the formation of heat damage.

The razor pre coating is complete except for final grind on hollow at this point all I need to grind is the hollow it is .050 I finish the hollow and then do clean up sanding only.
