Thread: A couple questions before attempting my own razor :D

OK I have couple questions as I embark on this. I have a mill available to me at work, is it "cheating" using a mill to get my general shape? Also does anyone offer heat treating on this forum? I will be using 01 tool steel and I just don't have any good way to heat treat at the moment. I am more than happy to pay for services. Any help or advice with these two questions is greatly appreciated. Thank you all in advance

i would think that any way you can remove metal is acceptable, Mastro Livi uses a angle grinder, besides no one has to know how it was formed anyway (we all know now but i won't tell). i've been thinking of trying my hand at it so it will be of interest to see who does heat treating.

I didn't figure it would matter was just curious as to opinions. Just seems like I have great machining tools available why not use them I am curious as to the heat treating as well, I imagine I can find someone on line but would rather go with someone from this forum that has experience with razor treatment.

I don't know if any members offer heat treating. I would think someone would but you might try some local shops. I know of a local machine shop in my neck of the woods that has heat treated items for the industrial plant that I work at.

I don't think anyone would frown on you using a mill. It's the final product that matters. If you go the the workshop section there is a subsection at the top called the forge. That would be the place to ask about heat treating.

IMO it doesn't matter how u make the trip just as long as u arrive at the destination... Use a mill or whatever u got to do... And oh yeah, Have fun!

Using a mill is ok of course. It's just a different kind of stock remval that is just as heathen as the others

If you find noone locally i can ht for you. Mike blue might also be able to help you
One thing though.: you will need to leave the edge thick enough for ht so after ht you need some sort of wet grinder or sander to do the final metal removal
