Thanked: 292You might not be able to teach your daughter how to shave with a straight razor, but you can teach her how to make one. Wonderful! Today, so many kids don't want to do anything except play on their computers and cell phones. You might not know who Mike Rowe is, buit he was the start of a USA TV show called "Dirty Jobs"/ Each week, he documented the hard jobs that have to be done for the rest of us to enjoy civilization. He offered a full scholarship to a trade school to any Millennial who wanted to learn a trade such as becoming an electrician, plumber, welder, mechanic, or presumably, a blacksmith. All they had to do was write an short essay on what they wanted to become. He got no entries; no one took him up on his offer. I am glad your daughter wants to learn a skill from her dad, just like multiple generations of sons and daughters have done before her. It seems that you skill at parenting is as good as your skill at making razors.

Thanked: 315Looks like good time. I'm skeptical when a man says a woman in the house is listening to him though.
Never heard of that scholarship. I know a lot if guys that would have taken that in a heartbeat. Sometimes I wish I had learned a trade instead of getting a BS I never use and am still paying for.- Joshua

That is really awesome Bruno, I wish I had a dad like you. What are you achieving by hitting it with wood?

She bent the twist a little. In order to straighten it out, you have to tap it straight again.
You can do this with a hammer if you are very careful, but there is risk of hitting too hard and damaging the ridges of the twist.
Hitting with wood, you can hit hard enough to bend the steel straight again, but there is no risk of the hammer face crushing the ridges of the twist.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

Thanked: 315Let her know know we thought she did a great job!
It turned out really nicely. In the future I can reference those if my wife asks why i need/want blacksmithing and knife making equipment for.

Thanked: 101I work with a really great female blacksmith, Lorelei Sims. I maintain her equipment for shop time though I haven't been in the shop much this Summer due to health problems in the family.
She has a great book out called "The Backyard Blacksmith" that you can get at blacksmithchic.com . Probably the best book for the beginner or seasoned smith. Lot's of great color pictures.
Check out her site, it's worth it! Tell here Dave Huffman sent you.
