single bevel kitchen knives and razors are ground on monster wheels like that in Japan the problem is that each wheel that size cna run 4-5K$ and thats just one grit
the belt grinder alows swapping grits and costs the same as one good wheel set up

oo that grinder will move a pile of steel if one wanted to hog off the profiles

Hi. I'm not sure that the british made grinder I was looking into is going to work out so I've spoken to Norm Coote about one of his coote grinders. Even with the shipping costs it's a good price, so I just wanted to ask one more question for now.....Would you recomend 2" x 6" x 48" or 2" x 8" x 72" ?

I'm drawn to the 6" x 48" as it's cheaper and will take up less space in my shed, but what would be the limitations of the smaller contact wheel?

    Sorry that's two questions

there are more belt options for the 2x72
the 8 inch wheel will nicely grind 5/8 and 6/8 razors and a more hollow 7/8
the 2 inch wheel is not a grinding wheel (just for ajustig the belt tension i think)

I was looking for long time to sort this out. However in UK it is pain. Not just expensive but also health and safety cr... around it is unbelieveable. I have seen last year 2 grinders going on fleebay here in UK but prices were equaly high. I got accross this link which gave me some motivation. If I can not put this together then I do not need to bother start with razors. Now just to locate 240V motor with speed control and some contact wheels and hopefully I will be off.

I ordered a set of plans to make a knife grinder off the "bay" and have to say that they are pretty descent plans that should be able to be made without the need of a machine shop. It is made of square metal tubing & bolted together...no welding even though I have a welder. I haven't started to make it yet, but once I get it together & see that it runs true I plan to weld everything together for longevity.
