Oil on grinding belts
While changing oil tonight in my truck I spilled a little oil on a few grinding belts. Not much, one drop each on two and three drops on another. The spots are an inch or less in diameter. Will I start a fire if I use these with all the sparks from grinding? I suppose the backing material on the belts has to be flame proof so even if the oil did burn would it do any damage? I suppose I could just use them for wood.
You might be asking, "How in the hell did he do that changing oil in his truck?" I am going to blame my wife. She makes me make a spot for her in my 3 stall garage for her to park her Jeep in in the winter. I keep telling her that garages are not for street vehicles, they are for toys. Here are a couple of pictures. You might even be able to spot my grinder with the belts hanging on it on the right as you would drive in. LOL Tim

I use oil on my belts as a lubrication sometimes, I like wd40 on my silicon carbide grits in the hight grits. I will also use oil on a worn 220 grit while getting a satin finish. I am always experimenting.

Thanked: 995You might get a few drops flung at you. I think you need to have a garage sale, your stuff is breeding.
The only thing I think could happen would be for the oil to act as a solvent on the glue holding the grit on the belt on those spots and the grit will let go. The sparks will all get thrown away from the belt. If you got a piece of steel hot enough to burn oil it would be near 600-700 degrees F. You won't be holding it in your hand then.“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. Most people can bear adversity. Thank you all for your replies. They make me feel better about my OOOOPS.
I should get rid of some of my "stuff". I hate the idea of a garage sale. I don't know why. Probably because I am not into bargaining. If I put 50 cents on something, don't try to talk me down to a quarter.
The other day at work the subject of muskrat trapping came up. I told my coworker if he needed any hide stretchers I had a half dozen hanging from my rafters. He replied, "What don't you have in that garage?"
I do have a bunch of Opel Manta parts that would be free to a good home.
Thaks again Tim

Thanked: 170I really don't understand why anyone would think your shop/garage needs a cleaning - but then, I'm comparing it to my shop. I'd post a picture, but I can't find my camera - I know it's in there somewhere, and besides, there is nowhere to stand to get a complete shot. LOL

Did you notice I opened the door to get a shot? LOL I have one of theose new fangled phones with a camera as part of it. Every once in a while I remember it is there and use it. It hangs on my belt so it is hard to lose. About once a year or so I have to go through everything to help remember where it is. While cleaning I found a bin of taps and dies that I didn't remember was there, I hadn't needed to look for it though because I have another set that I use often on a shelf at the other end!
