My new love: Rosie the anvil
I picked her up today. I found her on our national 2nd hand website. Apparently, there is a lively market for 2nd hand anvils. Most of them are either too heavy, or too expensive for the shape they're in. This one was buried underneath many newer ads. I suspect it didn't draw too much attention because there was no minimum price listed. You had to bid.
I contacted the seller directly via email, and asked if it was still available, and if my bid was negotiable. It was kind of a lowball bid, meant to get the negotiations started. To my surprise it got accepted. The seller even agreed to take the auction offline so that noone could outbid me anymore (since my bid was done via email so as to not draw attention to it). I basically bid 1 $ per pound
The table is smooth as glass still, there is only 1 light blemish on the entire surface, and the sides of the table are still sharp. This anvil was well cared for. I'll be building a shed outside to the house, so that she has her own space. At 120 kilos, I don't want to move it any more than reall necessary.
And why 'Rosie'? Well, at 250 pounds, with 2 mint horns, 2 holes and a near mint hardened surface, you could say she's got it all!Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

Cool anvil! Its interesting that it has a pritchet hole/Hardy hole on the side.
Was this an old armourers anvil? Looks like its set up to use various sheet metal forming stakes as well as the standard cut off hardies and such.

That's cool, but I wish I hadn't seen it. That picture could start a whole new hobby. My wife would love that!

Way cool. I've got a mini anvil complete with hardy hole and cut off stake. I've always loved them and wanted a large one like that but no place to put it and I wouldn't really use it. The image of the 'village smithy' forging with his hammer has always inspired me. I hope Rosie sees much use Bruno, and it turns out to be a marriage made in heaven.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 2209Nice, nice anvil! One that size is difficult to find and the condition is even more difficult to come across.
