    Default New Anvil ?

I have been wanting to try a taller anvil height. I went to the scrap yard on Friday and bought stuff, fork lift tine, harrow disk, thick walled square tubing. I cut and welded it up this weekend. I fashioned some sort of bending fork on the side of the tine. It will not be an anvil for moving lots of metal, I anticipate using it for the final shaping and tweaking. Hopefully it will work out.

That is a great idea for an anvil! Thank you!

Good idea. Looks a bit tall. If it is only for tweaking it should be right. To move metal you need the lower anvil height to get the power of the swing. Figure you already have that.
Just watch you don't strain back or elbow on this one. Maybe lighter hammers for it?

For light tweaking it would work. The only thing I would change (It think) is to sink the foot in concrete, or perhaps bolt it to the floor. That way it can't start to dance and wobble.

    Hmmm, ingenuity at work again!

I see the harrow disk blade is the round base, the forklift tine is the bottom portion of the post?, the square tubing is the top part of the post & welded to the forklift tine? OK, so what did the 2 round things on the side come from? thick walled pipe?

    Thanks for sharing

I can see where this would work pretty well. With some of the crazy shapes and indentions on your blades Charlie. A 125-250lbs. standard shaped anvil would make it pretty difficult and time consuming to do those finite adjustments w/ the larger horns. Hell, I like it! From the way it sounds he would be using lite hammers to "adjust" and "fine tune" the body into exactly how he wants it, not really pounding it into shape; that's perfect! If we had a golf clapping smiley you would have just earned it sir.

That looks great Charlie. I have a friend that has been a blacksmith for many many years and he had a similar thought a few years ago. He came up with a round piece of heavy steel stock about 5" in diameter and about 4 1/2' tall (very tall guy). Welded it to a base just like yours and it works like a champ for him.

i'll bet you will like it alot.

The top portion is the forklift tine. the piece underneath is a piece of thick walled square tubing. The two nubs on the side are solid pieces of round stock. I put them close together so I could stick the tang between them and make bends.

The height of the anvil is about 2" higher than my fist if I hang my arm straight down. I have completely hammered out a few razors with it.

The harrow disk is gong shaped, it rings like one also, unless you keep your foot on it. The top surface would work better if it were a bit harder. If I were grading I would give it a C.

I should have just put the block of metal on a stump, like somebody suggested I do. At least I got to practice my welding. It is hard for me to resist the call of the Rube Goldberg Sirens, I can take something simple like a hunk of metal on a stump and complicate it.

2" above the fist? That is about wrist height. Isn't that the same as your other anvil?
