Thanked: 485Cool, what sort of martial arts? I did Krav Maga for a little while but it got too much for my joints. I found that a really good workout and very natural moves. Of course I'm no expert at all, it was for only six months or so. I also felt if one wanted to get fit one may as well get fit and learn to fight all at the same time...

I recently started to involve a Schwinn Airdyne Cycle in my exercise. I am amazed at what can be done with a simple machine and a little ingenuity. Watch this for a few minutes. I don't really like the music but you can get the idea.

Traditional ninjutsu and jujutsu. Most of the time, I never mention ninjutsu at all because people have this image of ninjutsu perpetuated by hollywood, with lots of backflips and throwing stars. In reality, there is a LOT of 'boring' basic training which is repeated ad nauseam, which is not flashy at all.
Sadly, there are way too many organizations who have invented their own 'brand' of ninjutsu based on what they think it should be like (typically done by westerners). Because the ninja image sells. These are the guys that do have backflips and throwing stars as part of the main training. I don't want to be associated with those people. So usually I just say I practice jujutsu (which is true) and leave it at that. There are only 3 orgs worldwide who have a legit claim to teach ninjutsu. Not surprisingly, those are Japanese orgs. They also stem from the same source. There is one more (Japanese) org which has a claim that is controversial but at least has several things supporting their claim. All the rest range from very dodgy to downright fraudulent.
Anyway, I practice / teach (assistant teacher) those 2 arts 2 to 3 times per week, which involves a lot of movement, various ways of rolling and falling, and repetitive basic exercises. For me, this covers endurance training and general body workout. So I only use dumbbells for muscle mass and strength.
We also do weapons training but that doesn't start in earnest until we reach blackbelt, which I am not yet.Last edited by Bruno; 04-15-2013 at 10:09 AM.

Thanked: 28That's very interesting to hear Bruno, I just picked up the new book Ninja - 1000 years of the shadow warrior, by John Man
I haven't read all of it yet but it looks really interesting, a lot of history on the roots of the ninja, the Iga and Koga villages etc.
I always wanted to do Ju-Jutsu, the japanese style one, I used to do Judo in my childhood, and I did some wing chun and Hung Gar Kung fu later in life. I'd love to learn real ninjutsu but I don't even know theres a real teacher I can learn from in melbourne. I have seen a chain of schools called Kevin Hawthorne Ninja Academy but I'm doubtful that it's the real thing."In the words of the ancients, one should make his decisions within the space of seven breaths."
