Not sure whether it was Hemingway or Steinbeck, but I recall reading a novel or short story, in my early teens, where a character was learning to be a hobo, and was shown how to shave with broken glass. Not recommending it, and I've resisted the temptation ....... just thought I'd throw it into the mix.
