Thanked: 9Bad idea of the day: Shaving with knives
Yep...
I've always been good at sharpening knives, and after a recent 4 day trek with my fiancé in the Green Mountains, our knives needed sharpening. As usual, I brought them up to 2500 grit on wet/dry sandpaper on top of a mousepad--I prefer a convexed edge on outdoor knives since it holds an edge the longest when processing wood (chopping, batonning, etc.)
I followed that up with a stropping on black compound, white TI compound, .5 CrOx, then leather. That's my standard knife sharpening ritual. It always is amusing for us to shave each other's arm/leg hair a little once our knives are scary sharp... Yes, she is that awesome. She likes knives, guns, hiking, and camping.
Anyway, I decided why not try it on my face? I lathered up and shaved one half of my face with the Mora Bushcraft and the other with the Ontario Blackbird. Only one pass each, WTG. The shave wasn't good, but it was definitely better than my first shave with a straight razor. Hopefully I'm not a giant ingrown hair factory tomorrow.
As I was shaving, just feet away from my dozens of artfully crafted precision shaving instruments, I had to laugh at the sheer absurdity of the situation. These are primitive tools in comparison, and the edge geometry is precisely what you DON'T want in a shaving instrument. But still, I had a passable shave and I've had worse sting from my homemade bay rum after shave (high alcohol content).
Maybe I'm losing it, but it was fun. Something I certainly won't do again, yet strangely satisfying. I'll let you know if my face still exists tomorrow. I hope my idiocy was at least a source of entertainment for y'all.

My father put up an electric fense when I was 10 years, he said, "Don't touch this, it will hurt."
I waited a few days, but had to see for myself,,,,,yes,,,it hurt.
but I was 10,,,

No not really,,,,sometimes the temptation is just too much,,,
I sometimes do things that I should know better than to try,,,like asking out women in their twenties,,,,once did it & she smiled, pinched my cheek, saying "Now that was nice of you." as she walked away never to be seen again.

Thanked: 3225Can't comment on the shaving with knives bit but you mentioned a Mora knife and that jogged my memory bank. When I was a kid every hardware store carried what looks like their classic line in today's Mora site. You could bend by hand that blade almost to right angle and straighten it without it breaking. I don't know what the bending and unbending proved but it did surprise me. They took a good edge too, shaving arm hair any day of the week. Sorry for the OT post, I have not seen them sold locally for a long time.
