I'm not sure when those electric fenses first came out, but they were quite popular it seemed when I was small. The kids in the area would gather around it & it would become one of those "dare you to" issues.

Not sure whether it was Hemingway or Steinbeck, but I recall reading a novel or short story, in my early teens, where a character was learning to be a hobo, and was shown how to shave with broken glass. Not recommending it, and I've resisted the temptation ....... just thought I'd throw it into the mix.

After watching that video of someone axe shaving..
There was one of a guy using obsidian, which is volcanic glass. If that counts to you guys, it worked to an extent.

^ I have shaved with a knife before..
It worked, but was not to pleasant, course it was a dry shave in the field.
there was ALOT of tugging, and my face was quite red for the next hour or so..
but no cuts
i was in a several day Milsim event where your not permitted to leave the field. Its a re-enactment of sorts, and was the most fun i have ever had.
Using airsoft guns of course, paintball is to fake for such things, and blanks arent bad.. but you can never tell if your actualy shot or not.
Well, long story short.. i wanted to keep up appearances instead of a patchy beard, and the knife was all i had, along with a small hand mirror.

I used to exhibit at the American Meat Institute Expo in McCormick Place every (other) year. On the last day/hour of the show a couple of the exhibitor guys from TruHone, who hadn't shaved since the last Expo, chopped some timber then sharpened double bladed pole axes, lather and shaved. It was always kind of a hoot reserved mostly for other exhibitors since the hall was usually about empty at show end. The last time I went to the show was, coincidentally, the last time the shave was permitted. It got real bloody and TruHone and the Expo officials both agreed no mas. I hold that, just because some things CAN be done doesn't always mean they MUST be done.
Yes, I manufactured commercial cutlery;
no, I never shaved my face with one of my knives;
yes, I shaved lots of arm hair; and
no, I'll never shave with a knife or an axe.
I honor those who do but after the McCormick Place episode I will not watch."We'll talk, if you like. I'll tell you right out, I am a man who likes talking to a man who likes to talk."

Thanked: 247Bad idea of the day: Shaving with knives
I have experience with knife sharpening, and razor honing. I also have experience doing it for others. I also have experience shaving with both knives and straights.
In my time I have seen people want shave ready edges put on knives, and knife edges put on razors.
Please re read that last sentence, because I think you should not consider one without considering the other. Simply put, either transformation can be made, but it is wholly at the cost of the intended purpose of the original tool. Further it is no less horrific to see a straight used as a pocket knife than it is to watch someone attempt to prove they can comfortably shave with the knife they actually used as a knife moments before.Last edited by unit; 10-29-2013 at 06:37 PM.
