Dark Ages of SRP
The title of the thread was taken from gssixgun today in a honing thread. To paraphrase he mentioned the use of the term 'overhoning' that would appear frequently as an explanation of for a lack of success at honing I guess. So I was wondering if there were other beliefs that were once 'set in stone' so to speak, that have since been discredited, or highly modified?

There are more than you can imagine. Just for starters; a razor has to rest, you need to custom the razor for the beard, you have to shave with only hot water. others will add to the list quickly.

Let's see:
- Coticules are for finishing after 8K only.
- You need the belgian blue before the yellow coticule in a natural progression.
- Tamahagane has special properties that guarantee magical shaves.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

I'd forgotten about resting razors! With that also went the idea that you mustn't strop after shaving, since (the wisdom went) the serrations were cockeyed from the shave and would get pinged off by stropping. "Resting" the razor would allow the serrations to fall back into line.

You'll save tons of money once you start shaving with a straight or a DE.

Thanked: 13246See now that actually was true back then, NOS and Mint condition razors were easy to find on E-bay and pretty darn cheap.. You could easily get a really good kit for less then $100, including a Swaty BH
I remember a Sticky from one of the old Admins that broke down the costs per year, and it was darn well accurate, that in less then 1 year you were too the good... That even included the 2nd SRLast edited by gssixgun; 01-14-2014 at 06:11 AM.

Hot water opens the pores and boiling water ruins the temper of razor steel.
