There is a wire cage around the edge that keeps it from coming into full contact with the skin, very similar to how a safety or DE works. If the blade not coming into full contact with your face, then it is harder to cut your self with it. It would probably give you similar shaves to your DE.

I have used a shavette before I went to a real straight, though I never used a feather.
Real straights require a different technique, and they are also much more forgiving than disposable bladed razors.
In the beginning I thought to keep my shavette for traveling, but I have long since given up that idea. I'll always hang on to it because it was a gift from my mother, and my first decent razor, but I don't want to shave with anything other than a real blade anymore.
My wife likes me to use straights because the result is better and I shave more often now. This allowed me to buy a 1K/4K norton, a 4/8 norton, a yellow and blue belgian combo stone and a tony miller strop.
I also actually like honing razors so I don't mind spending time with the stones
But that is just me. Shaving is a very personal thing, so everybody is likely to have different opinions.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.
