Default AOS Rebrand STR8 vs REAL Thiers-Issard STR8 Razor

I noticed that "The Art of Shaving" are offering a "rebrand" STR8 for $105.00 which they claim is made by Thiers-Issard.

I'd like to price check and comparison shop what AOS are offering.

What would be the equivalent style, grade, and ptrice if I bought a REAL Thiers-Issard STR8 razor bought somewhere else...?

    Ideas anyone?

    Thanks in advance,

    Tony

That could be anywhere from 80 to 800 euros, give or take a couple of euros.
It all depends on size, grind, steel, scales, decoration and whether Pierre himself made the blanks or not.
For 108$ I suspect it will be a 5/8 or 6/8 hollow ground round point with plain scales. I have absolutely no information to base those claims on, other than that is the price such a razor would fetch if it were from TI.

Actually, it would be a bit more expensive probably, but you would buy it without the brand name.

Go to classicshaving.com I am guessing either $79 or $89 but without the Thiers Isard name on it it should be even less. I would take a pass..

    Thanks for the input guys....

I think I need to explain what I'm REALLY after...

The reason that I'm considering buying a STR8 razor from AOS is that they're offering a complementary shave and training with the purchase of a STR8 razor.

I asked them if they would give me the "training session" without my having to buy a razor from them...I even offered to pay them a FEE for the training session EVEN...I figure that a basic training on Stropping, honeing, and shaving would be worth at least $30-$40, and getting a shave thrown in as well, why not?

I'm interested to find out if the razor that they're offering is any good to begin with or if it's a total bow-wow...

They still want me to buy something from them...

I'm looking at two types of STR8 that they're offering.

Here's their TI rebrand for $105 with black (plastic) scales I assume...

    Here's something interesting, a disposable blade STR8 for $45.00
    http://www.theartofshaving.com/taos6...68018&group=10

I was trying to figure out what TI STR8 at classic was the equivalent razor.

I'm going over to their shop on Madison Ave in NYC on my lunch break to have a closer look at what they have to offer......

The training session is what I'm REALLY after....

    bah to all that non-sense.

how about this: you buy me a mama bear or qed or honeybee or colleen soap and ill give you that training session. honing, stropping, lather making, shaving techniques etc etc and this way you'll get it from someone that shaves themselves with a real straight... not from a person that shaves someone else with a feather.

oh, im assuming you live in NYC..

im serious.. PM me and ill be happy to teach ya these things.

What an offer! I wish there was someone in London who could've done this for me.

    Default keep this in mind

One thing to keep in mind, is that I doubt even if you bought it from AOS and therefore there was no shipping necessary, you most likely will have to send it out to be honed, or hone it by yourself - it's not going to be shave ready...and take it from me, do not believe a word that anyone in AOS tell you about their products. I have not and will not buy a straight from them, but we had a discussion a while back about their sales pitch regarding products (specifically their brushes) and their pricing. In general, it was a general consensus that a lot of what they tell you is not very truthful and their products are generally overpriced.

If you get a TI from classicshaving.com and have it initially honed by Lynn, it would be roughly the same price AOS wants for their razor, which is probably straight from the factory, and will be too dull to get a proper shave with.

Just my $2.00...yes, I said dollars...this one is worth more than 2 cents

I would have met you half way, say on the Fleet services on the M3. Would have possibly looked strange us both stropping in the public toilets.....OMG no that sounds wrong so wrong

AOS in general is overpriced. You could likely get the same razor from classic shaving for less. Be sure to get it honed..

A lot of good replies and I'm not disagreeing with any of them but . . . I'd take our member up on his offer. That be great.

Also, they hone the razor at the AOS shaving shop (and in a very interesting way from what I've heard). It won't be all the info you could gleen from reading our forum but to be honest a beginning level of instruction, a night of shaving, and a razor is actually well worth $100 some bucks.

I have paid $60 just for a shave. I have given lessons to a few of our members and I only touch the surface in like 3 hours, so I don't think $105 is really all that bad. But you'll still get better instruction from one of our members and Lynn's DVD and still have money left over for a nice TI.

I would personally do all of it. It'll be much more interesting for you to meet with one of our members after the training session for "comparison" info.
