    I thought it was a well known fact when you go into boot camp you only have with you what Uncle sam issues you. Any weapon is a big no no even a small pocket knife.

    Gentlemen,

    If memory serves, all but the basics are taken away at boot camp. They even buzzed my hair gone. I mean, the nerve. No, no weapons of any kind.

    Depending on the branch, they may allow some personal items which can "travel" in a knapsack. The Marines let you take nothing at all. Pants, shirt, underwear, socks and shoes. That's it.

    Best thing is to take nothing but what the recruiter says is mandatory. It all gets packed up and not returned until you graduate. There will be enough chaos on the yellow footprints without something extra memorable like a weapon or personal effects for DIs to focus on
