The bad news is that whatever you get, it's gonna be pricey (we're talking high-end London retail). The good news is it will be an unforgettable experience, and as others have pointed out loads of shops to interest your wife.

As a general tactic, I'd head to those shops first before going to Taylors. She will have made a buy or two and would be less inclined to deny you yours then!

What a coincidence though James. I work just outside of Oxford (Abingdon) and live in London. I would have been more than happy to have taken you both for afternoon tea in London, say at Fortnum & Masons. But we're just about to get away to Wales for the Easter break... give me a heads up next time and we'll sort something out.

    Cheers

Dude! Good advice, in general, but when it comes to my wife, I'm no man! At least, I'm not a suicidal man. I'm with Rich on this one - while I agree with you in principal, in practice I'm just too fond of my "crown jewels" to give that tip a go.

No worries Majurey, and thanks for the offer and advice. Looks like I'll be coming back to Oxford pretty often into the foreseeable future, so I'll definitely let you know.

    Hi James,

I'd be interested in prices from there. Do you get the opportunity to buy VAT free?
I wonder if they do sample packs, I would really love to try some Avocado and St James.

    Cheers

You guys are the best. Thanks.

The secret to a happy marriage is knowing how to leverage technicalities in your favor and collecting a good excuse rolodex that you can access quickly when the technicalities aren't working.

    John,

I'll take a note of prices - there are some prices on their online shop. I don't think I can get anything VAT free, unfortunately.

I'll take a look and see about samples.

Well, I've been married 9 years, and we began "stepping out" 10 years prior to that. In all that time, I never fully appreciated the "technicality" method until I started using - and, probably more to the point, buying - straights.

She's fine with my fountain pens, my vintage watches (I had to do some fast stepping with an old Omega - another story for another time...), even with brushes, creams, aftershaves et al. But the razors themselves...

I went to Jermyn st, london, and everything, razors brushes and strops was double the price i could get it elsewhere. Obviously rent is not cheap there!

Very nice to be able to see a lot of the kit in person of course.
