Hey Brendon, I know exactly what you mean. I think it's the oriental blood in me. My beard is soft and sparse and grows only an inch each side of the midline, i.e. tache, goatee area, and neck. No sideburns, no cheeks growth, BBS there all the time.

As a young man I felt this was unmanly (combined with my oriental origins, my friends decided to call me "Ladyboy", which was kinda funny ). But by about my mid-twenties I was pretty glad for it. Especially as I thought shaving (with canned cream and disposables) was a total drag. And guess what, my mates admit they're jealous of my only having to shave every 48 hours now (but they still call me Ladyboy to take the piss).

Since getting into straight shaving I do kinda wish I shaved every day, but then I probably wouldn't spend the time on it as I do now. And it's great that I can shave the night before, wake up the next morning and still have a BBS effect!

There's really only one serious downside to people with beard growth like ours... the shave test during honing just isn't feasible sometimes!

Aha!!! Someone hit upon me other lament! I always wondered how I could shave test more than one razor, it I barely have enough to get a good idea os what the edge wants me to do. I only really have my sideburns to tell me if the razors will cut hair, and my upper lip to tell me if it is stupid sharp (what I'm going for. If I don't it pulls like crazy). Still haven't figured it out...

The more you shave the thicker the hair grows back. Is this true?

I don't think this is true -- if you do an internet search -- most claim this to not be true but it can cause changes in stubble color (darkening) which can make one think its thicker. I guess if this was true a way of curing male baldness would be to shave the head until you got a mop top. Let it grow back James --let's see.

I wonder about that too. I think it's just an old wives tale. Afterall, if that were true, some ladies would have (fore)arm hair that could rival the toughest beard.

False, people assume it's thicker because the ends are sharp from cutting, and the whiskers are stiff because they're short.

Hair thickness is dictated by what the roots are doing, not what you're doing to the outside end.

I don't know the technical details of these things, but I'm sure you're right. I read somewhere once that baldness relates in some way to excess testosterone killing the roots (or some-such). Personally, I always thought it was because my brain was so big that it pushed all the hairs out of my head
