I was also going to suggest that this Hess is not a real straight...

Love the idea of bringing your own razor (but if the guy can't hone and strop this is a bit scary). And if he's not used to the size, shape, and weight who knows what the results will be.

Most importantly, however, I just don't think I'd trust a barber to shave me with a straight - period. Call me paranoid but I have heard some pretty scary stories, even from / for supposedly competent barbers

    Cheers

    Default yep

I'd be a little worried about just handing a straight to my barber to shave me with too.

I do however take a little 4/8 in so he can use it to do the "skin" part of the skin fade.

I get a high and tight. Very high and Very tight.

I was watching one day and noticed that he used the same disposable for like 3 people. Hang on, I'll be back with my own razor in just a sec !

    Thank you for this, Michael!

Really enjoyed reading it. Actually, I think I have read it long ago (the god fight incident part was extremely familiar) but at this time I either didn't shave at all or was using an electric (bet I was feeling smart for using it, too)

This account may cause some arguments here, though - many members have a much more idealistic view of the old time barbers and the whole experience

Is this place still open and does Tom still work there? I'll be in Myrtle Beach in December.

While I'm new to the forum, I've been a straight razor shaver for about a year now. I would like to share an experience that I had about two days ago.

First a little background. About two years ago I had my first ever straight razor shave in a barber shop. My wife knowing I had always wanted one took me for my B-day and paid for it. As it turned out the guy hated doing shaves (why he kept it listed as a service was beyond me) but he did give me one. His main complaint was that our state requires the use of disposable blade razors and that because they are machine sharpened, they have a tendency to nick the customer to easily. Needless to say he did nick me a couple times and instead of a "close shave" I would describe it as a "far shave".

Moving forward, I had been going to a different barber for the last six months and while they don't list hot lather shaves, they do give them. For something different I asked for one when getting my hair cut Wednesday. This guy, Tom, was 28 years old and used a Hess Ezy Shave on me. He did a fantastic job! He used the mug and brush, hot steam towels, got very close and not the slightest bit of irritation, all for a grand total of eight bucks. I told him I used a straight razor at home and he said he could tell just by how well my beard responded to his razor.

If you're ever in the Myrtle Beach area I would highly recommend going to Woody's barber shop and having Tom give you a shave. It's nice to finally experience a real barbershop shave. It was also nice to see a guy four years my junior do such a great job, leading me to think that maybe he is an endangered breed of barber, but not one to be extinct.

A married man should forget his mistakes. There is no use in two people remembernig the same thing.
