My Second Barbershop Shave
Hey all,
While I'm new to the forum, I've been a straight razor shaver for about a year now. I would like to share an experience that I had about two days ago.
First a little background. About two years ago I had my first ever straight razor shave in a barber shop. My wife knowing I had always wanted one took me for my B-day and paid for it. As it turned out the guy hated doing shaves (why he kept it listed as a service was beyond me) but he did give me one. His main complaint was that our state requires the use of disposable blade razors and that because they are machine sharpened, they have a tendency to nick the customer to easily. Needless to say he did nick me a couple times and instead of a "close shave" I would describe it as a "far shave".
Moving forward, I had been going to a different barber for the last six months and while they don't list hot lather shaves, they do give them. For something different I asked for one when getting my hair cut Wednesday. This guy, Tom, was 28 years old and used a Hess Ezy Shave on me. He did a fantastic job! He used the mug and brush, hot steam towels, got very close and not the slightest bit of irritation, all for a grand total of eight bucks. I told him I used a straight razor at home and he said he could tell just by how well my beard responded to his razor.
If you're ever in the Myrtle Beach area I would highly recommend going to Woody's barber shop and having Tom give you a shave. It's nice to finally experience a real barbershop shave. It was also nice to see a guy four years my junior do such a great job, leading me to think that maybe he is an endangered breed of barber, but not one to be extinct.

The next step is corrupting your barber.
mine will uses a dispoable normally, no doubt a regulation, but he will also shave you with your own razor if you bring it in. Perhaps your will as well, never hurts to ask.Be just and fear not.

You know, I certainly considered that.
We did discuss razors as he was cutting my hair. I told him I used my great grand father's Dubl Duck and he said "So you have to hone and strop it then. I can't ever seem to get a good edge on those, I either over hone or do something else wrong."
But give me time, I'll work on him a little with each visit.

Eight bucks for a straight shave??? That's a steal!!
I'm paying $15 for the same thing in Podunk, Idaho. (although, she does include a scalp massage)
Heckuvadeal - half of the enjoyment is getting all fussed over and enjoying the experience...as for quality of shave, I find I can give myself a marginally better (closer) shave....but I do enjoy the laying back and the steamers and the fussin'....

I think I will move to Macedonia then.
My local "Gentlemans grooming" salon charges £25.
I could buy a decent restored straight for that!

My barber charges $7.50 for a shave and $7.50 for a haircut. I can get out of there with a haircut and a shave for under $20. Sweet.
