    Default Shaving and razor story

Had a discussion with a co-worker who told me that his wife gets a discount on Edge shaving gel and has 20+ cans of it. I told him that I use a brush which sort of amazed him. Then he told me that he wished his wife would get a discount on Mach 3 blades because as he stated, "I pay $8 for 4 blades and they only last me a couple of months." He was even more amazed when I told him that I use a straight razor. His response was, "You mean those long blade things? I didn't think they made those any more. I'd be afraid I'd cut myself." My response to him was, "Yeah, there are places which still sell them or you can buy them on ebay. I get the best shaves from a straight razor and very seldom do I ever nick myself -- actually less than when I used disposables."

Moral of this story is that I think the majority of guys don't think that anyone uses a straight razor any more. I feel sorry for them. It's ashame that most guys aren't experiencing what we all are...what a truly great shave is by using a straight razor.

You will find it fun to start trying to convert people. I have already got 2 under my belt - my girlfriends brother and a mutual friend of ours. I am working on at least another 2 at the moment.

    Si,

I keep hoping that as I tell other guys how great straight razors are, that maybe one of them would express some interest, but thus far, no one has. It's their loss.

He he - you have to spark the interest. It is after all something all men must in some small way aspire too, otherwise the media would not make such a fuss about shaving with an open blade...

Come on - sell it to them Rob.

I guess just by talking about it that would peak their interest. What I should be doing is after talking about shaving with a str8, I should suggest that they give it a try. That might help. That'll be my strategy next time.

Though I enjoy talking to people about straight shaving when it happens to come up in conversation...I wouldn't say that I actively try to recruit them. If I know the person well enough, I can usually tell if they're the type that would actually get into it...in which case they basically would get into it themselves. All I've done is shown them that it exists and how well it works for me.

As for the others (or people I just don't know very well), I try not to cast pearls before swine. I'll happily discuss it with them and answer their questions, but I won't go out of my way to sell it to them. I would rather find one person that is genuinely interested and would fully appreciate it than tell a dozen people to try it and have them go off and have a bad experience because they didn't do the proper research and didn't fully invest themselves.

One thing I find funny is that when I explain the benefits of straight shaving to people (skin health, stress relief, cost saving, environmental, awesomeness/manliness), they always seem to think it's a great idea...but they almost never make the connection that they might enjoy it, as if somehow it doesn't apply to them.

I've been thinking of using this photo for my Facebook profile. I wonder if it'd make people talk.

X - is this you? You look younger than what I thought. Interesting angle too

I wouldn't go as far as talk about pearls and swine, but I also am not actively seeking to convert people. I think I know my friends, and so far only one seems mildly interested. Proselytizing to strangers - I do not think so, not my type of thing.

If it comes up - I will certainly share what I know and offer support / help

    Cheers

    Default Barber Knife Converts

Are there any Massachusetts members among us? A couple of weeks ago I got together with some friends from Mass. who said that there is a new law there which bans knives with blades longer than 2 1/2". That pretty well puts the kibosh on that state's straight razor use. As Riley would have asked, "isn't that a revolting development?" Actually, a pretty apt comment for one of the original 13.
