Default My son finally gave it a try

This was a historic day for my family.

While I've been shaving with a straight for about 25 yrs, my 16 year old son finally has enough fuzz to need to shave it every now and then. He's been using a disposable razor and canned goo for a while now. I've always told him I'd show him how to use a straight razor when the time came if he wanted to try it. It's been about a year I guess since he started "shaving." Tonight I was watching Lynn's DVD again, and my son says, 'So, when do I get to try a straight razor?'

Well, I took him to the sink and coached him through his first almost complete str8 shave. He did pretty good -- only a couple minor nicks. But what I thought was the really cool part was that for the razor, I had him use the one that was his great grandfathers. I had to ponder/savor that thought for a bit. A razor that has spanned 4 generations!! It was from my mother's side of the family, so only three of those generations actually shaved with it (unless my Uncle did -- I don't know). Then a splash of Dominica bay rum to finish off. The resulting "ooouch" reminded me of that scene from 'Home Alone' when the kid uses aftershave. I thought that was pretty funny too.

    It was a good day.

Wow, that's a really, really nice touch. Giving him an alcohol a/s was a bit evil though

Congratulations and I wish to both, excellent smooth shavings!!
I understand how do you feel that I have two sons 19 and 15 both shaving with straight razors (The junior shaves his mustache-only there has wiskers-)

    Congrats.

The alcohol A/S is the icing on the cake. And to use that razor would have been a really special moment. Even though I don't have a razor from my family, I might have one coming that was a friends' grandfathers. As well the one i am getting from Josh is at least 120yrs old

Four generations. Amazing. Something the rest of us can't create...only envy. Keep us posted on how he does with it.

    Thanks!

    I have 2 sons (4 1/2 and 1) and I can't wait to teach them to shave.

    Congrats on the milestone.

Congrats to you both! That kinda makes me think of the stories these razors of ours could tell. Once they get to looking worn out, just re-scale them and they'll be good for another 2 or 3 generations.
I can just picture a grand nephew finding and opening my box of razors after I'm long gone. "Wow!" He might say as he puts away his new-fangled laser-razor. He goes online and finds a forum with a bunch of hardnuts who are still keeping the art of straight shaving alive and starts to straight shave.
