Standardize your tests, standardize your tests! That is the single best suggestion I can give you. Do the test(s) the same way every time at the same time. Then you will learn what they are telling you.

I only use the TNT on the 1K and 4K, never after that. I look for smooth and sharp as does honedright.

I use the TPT all the time on each hone. I want to feel the progression and at the end it needs to feel sticky after the 8K.

I use the HHT only on the 8K and it is the ease of cutting that I feel for. Repeat, feel.

I never use the HHT after that.
    Repeat, standardize your testing.

    Just my two cents,

Here's my take on such things.

Writing that then sure saves me a lot of writing now.

I don't mean to sound like I've got a big, gaping, vaginal crevice but the thumb nail test is making me a little squeamish. I would imagine I could make it with the TPT and the HHT just fine right? From what I read in The Deep End file, I want the razor to pass the tests before stropping. It looks like I'm doing the TPT for the 4k and the HHT off the 8k. What if I'm using the pyramid? Also, I read no more tests after the 8k. Does that mean no more tests for the coticule or pasted strops?

I've also read that you can actually see the burr or wire edge on an overhoned razor with a small microscope. Does anybody have any recommendations for a cheap microscope that would serve this purpose?

I perform the HHT after stroping, not before. Some people do it before stroping but I don't.

I don't mean to sound like I've got a big, gaping, vaginal crevice but the thumb nail test is making me a little squeamish. There is no substitute for the thumnail test when testing for nicks on the edge, except for a micrscope. I would imagine I could make it with the TPT and the HHT just fine right? From what I read in The Deep End file, I want the razor to pass the tests before stropping. It looks like I'm doing the TPT for the 4k and the HHT off the 8k. What if I'm using the pyramid? Use the TPT during all of the the honing process . It will tell you the progress you are making. Also, I read no more tests after the 8k. Does that mean no more tests for the coticule or pasted strops? Go ahead and do the tests during each honing medium. It will be informative.

I've also read that you can actually see the burr or wire edge on an overhoned razor with a small microscope. Does anybody have any recommendations for a cheap microscope that would serve this purpose?

just got the microscope in the mail and these things look trippy under it. Does anybody know where to get pictures of what a burr edge would look like up close?

Since a burr/wire edge is at a different angle it will reflect light differently and appear as a different color. Usually as a rust/brownish color along the very edge for a short distance. On the other side of the blade at the same place it will appear different since the angle is almost just the opposite.

    Hope this helps,

luckily I didn't see it on my razors but I did see the burr edge I gave my kitchen knife.

about the hht, I was passing the hht with everything off the norton but after finishing on the coticule I'm not passing it. I got the coticule wet and generated the slurry. 10 passes and nothings passing. Has anybody else had this experience?
