I guess you'd say it is both of those elements (but mostly, the latter) in combination. To me, it makes the razor much more comfortable to hold and yields greater control. I wish someone with TI's "ear" could pass this along to them. They, unfortunately, seem to be moving away from this design.

Ken;
That is very interesting. Actually, I tend never to hold a razor with the thumb underneath, but rather on the side. I have one of the older 'Eagles' which is ground out along the side, fairing into the tang without any shoulder at all. It is a really fine resting place for my thumb. I'm getting used to the new blade forms, but I keep coming back to this old Eagle

That looks beautiful! I can see your point. I'll give that grip a try sometime this week and see how it goes (Note - all views expressed are those of a newbie )
Thanks!

Thanked: 55Ignatz and Ken,
That Eagle in Ignatz's picture is identical to one of the Eagles I have and I purchased it about two years ago from the Knifecenter. I also have other Eagles that are even older that have double shoulders and single shoulders. From what I have read it's entirely up to the craftsman completing the razor as to how they would like to do it. So it may not a function of age to get a razor like Ignatz's but merely a stroke of luck with regards to which craftsman's razor you get. Personally I love them all and have no preference among them. I use these exclusively to shave with.
As for the new Silver Wing I'm not all that impressed, especially for the money. When they start making framebacks like the one in Ignatz's picture in the Silver Wing steel then I might consider one, but it's going to have to be a bit more reasonable in price. If not then I'm quite content to use my current Eagles until they lower me into the ground.
Regards,
EL

Well, RAD has filled six of the seven slots in my 7 day box with a variety of TIs . Some Eagles, some Bisons, one Loup et Bellier, four horn, two wood, five 6/8, one 7/8 but there is one slot labled "silverwing" - just waiting
I'd love to find one with the curved tang in horn. Horn handles are by far my favorite and I got a pretty good deal on three of them. The forth was exactly the same razor from a different vendor (different gold) for $40 more. I felt kinda silly but I didn't know 'til I had it.
The KC J86 is my favorite for the tang followed by the V stamped tang I stumbled over.
