    Default Shaving In Public

Does anyone have any stories to tell?

I own a sailing yacht and take my razor to the marina with me, and in the AM, shower and shave in the members-only locker room.

I am sure to encounter more people as the weather improves, and was wondering what other people's experiences are with shaving str8 in public places.

I am scared to death I am going to cut myself right in front of a bunch of guys and make a fool of myself or at least turn Str8 shaving into a laughing matter.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Paul

my roommates like to watch me shave and chant "cut yourself" which really doesn't make for a great shaving experience. That is as close as I've gotten to public shaving though.

You're going to get an audience... Best bet is try to avoid this until you are retty comfortable.
once you get it down well, you will command a new level of respect from them...

Just do a Belushi "Samurai Barber" routine on them and they'll be sure to leave you alone. The police might not, however.

I shave at the gym quite alot, in fact somewhere lost in the B&B archives is a thread about how to put together a "Cheap" travel kit, that you would not be afraid to lose...
The trick is quite simple, ignore the ignorant, and you will do fine, however I would suggest that you pick a spot as far away from any traffic as you can, you don't want someone accidentally bumping you while you have steel to face....

I did it once at my gym right next to a guy that was tearing is face to blitherines with a Mach 3 and walked away a bloody mess. I shaved in serene peace but to be honest I could tell a few were watching but were afraid to stare. Either they didn't want to look interested or realized I had a straight razor in my hand. In fact, I didn't have to wait for any piece of gym equipment all night.

That last sentence right there should tell you something indeed. Keep up the good work

I have a spare set of supplies in my locker at a university gym. I have not encountered any difficulties with doing it. I leave my strop attached to a length of chain in the locker so that the strop is entirely out of the locker when in use.
During the shaving I just ignore others around me to avoid distraction--I don't bother them and they don't bother me. I was paranoid the first couple of times and was wondering if anyone was watching but I realized it might be better to focus on the task at hand. Since then I just don't take any notice at all and just go merrily on my way.

I haven't shaved myself in public per se, but I once did a guy's head in front of a crowd as part of The World's Greatest Shave (leukemia and a couple of other cancer types charity event).

I used my 8/8 Friodur which, although nothing untoward occurred, was probably a mistake at the time - I got the hand-shakes big time (nervous of the crowd) which, given the blade's weight, exacerbated the problem. A few strokes in and things calmed down, but there was a moment or two where I thought I might scalp the poor bugger
