Thanked: 0Art of Shaving Opinion
So, I'm sure most users here have heard of the Art of Shaving before, and I was wondering if anyone had comments on their straight razors, and the quality in them. I'm looking to buy a razor from them and I'm willing to pay that much but I don't have any interest in it if I'm not going to get a quality blade from them.
If anyone has an opinion about them (or a suggestion for a better razor) then please do help me out! Any help is much appreciated

Their razors are rebranded Dovos and or Thiers Issard. You'd do bettter to just buy the same razor from ClassicShaving.com or Vintagebladesllc.com or another vendor. You'll save money. I would also avoid buying brushes from them. You can do better with a traditional manufacterer. Their creams and soaps are good though.

+1 on the creams. Everything else is way overpriced. I found out the hardway after I bought one of their brushes.

Thanked: 2I love their sandlewood soap !!!
I'd save the money and buy a lynn honed razor from classicshaving. You're pretty much paying for the nice overhead AOS has to support.

UM....
+ 1 for every post so far.
I bought the 100 dollar kit that came with a brush, pre-shave oil, creme and after shave balm and I love it. I could have gotten a better brush for less if I had been patient but the oil, ASB, and Creme (all sandlewood) are great. The blades are all Thiers-Issard and you get one size (4/8) and a limited choice of scales. I got my blade at classic shaving and for less, I was able to by a 6/8 and get it properly honed by lynn. Good luck and WELCOME!Last edited by sicboater; 04-03-2008 at 03:37 AM. Reason: punctuation for clarity '

It is certainly true that AOS are priced higher than Classic Shaving, however, they do offer service that can be of help to a new straight razor user. In New York they offer a lesson with the purchase of a razor and they have the razors sharpened by an experienced professional. Should they offer the same service where you are, it's worth considering.

Thanked: 4942I've honed up a few of these. They are definitely TI's. The handles are a little heavier, but that would be the difference.

Very well said. Especially the last line. The AOS in atlanta sent me to a local guy they said would hone my razor and he turned out to be wrong for the job. He just had a bad attitude in general. In his defense, he runs a business sharpening any type of edge not just straights. He said to me "straight razors are not meant to be used by the person getting the shave, they are meant to be used by the person GIVING the shave" I thanked him for his time and sent my blade to Lynn. I did go back and tell the AOS that the guy didn't seem to want to do business with st8 shavers. They appreciated the info and comp'ed me a second shave.

to this thread...very helpful. I would love to visit an AoS store, but unfortunately the closest to me is 4 1/2 hours away!
