Thanked: 1BARBICIDE FOR DISINFECTING
After seeing this, I got scared
http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthr...349#post585349
Is it safe to use barbicide on the brush? Also planning to use white regular vinegar with warm water and finally shampooing it with regular dishwasher soap. Ive had my brush now for over a month but I do notice I get these mild red bumps but only on the left cheek (maybe its not brush related, but maybe it is). So I think it needs to at least be cleaned but cleaning it doesnt eliminate that tinea barbae fungi. What do people think?

Why oh why did I follow that link...
The usual applies: keep it clean and keep it dry.
Not a bad idea though, to desinfect a brush every now and again.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

After reading the post I would also suggest not storing shaving equipment in the bathroom.
The bathroom is the most closed and humid environment in the house, often with the hot shower running and the window/door closed… perfect for bacteria/mold and other pathogens to thrive. Keeping your brush, strop and razor out of the bathroom helps to prevent other issues such as your razor rusting or your strop absorbing moisture and possibly becoming cupped.
Barber shops of old didn't have this problem because the shop was a large (well… larger than most bathrooms) and relatively well ventilated place (with a door opening to outside the building).

Like I said over at B&B one guy stores his brush improperly and gets something and the fact that millions of men use brushes and something like this happens and guys panic. I would guess you have a far better chance of winning the lottery than catching what that guy caught.

Thanked: 267After I started shaving I noticed that, I too had a bathroom with to much moisture.
I installed an axial flow fan in 8" ducting with an electronic timer. It sucks so much air the if the door is not latched close it will open about 2 feet.It is remote so there is not a lot of noise either.
Now moisture free and no rusting going on here,
Richard

Thanked: 1I live in a single apt which is real small (student). I always leave my window in there open so its never humid for longer than an hour. But Im still planning to put these items right outside my bathroom (straight blade, strop, brush etc), on my desk. I just started putting my brush there today.

Thanked: 1BTW Im just going to clean out my brush now, no barbicide right now. Ive only had this brush for a month or so. Its a Savile Row. The instructions say to use borax but ive seen EM use apple cider vinegar, warm water and dish soap. Can i just do that? I forgot to stop by the market and get the borax which I was thinking about all day

Thanked: 335People, people, people,
Why are we so concerned with sterilizing stuff? I assume that those so worried bathe in bleach daily to quell the spread of anything nasty. If one's epidermis were properly disinfected there should be little worry about those things (such as razors) contacting that part of one's corporeal self and thus becoming contaminated and thus enabled to spread badness. Hopefully those with bumps, welts, or other worries, either red, pink, or other shades of concern and located wherever, are also taking daily large doses of antibiotics to help stem the growth of any flora or fauna not stanched by those bleach baths.
Were one not satisfied that chemicals applied topically or taken by mouth not effective, one could always subject that offending part to disinfection by autoclaving. Twenty or thirty minutes at 275 degress makes most baddies good. Of course then, there's the prions.
None of us is safe. I guess it's beards for all... And this straight razor thing was just becoming to be such great fun. Damn!
