Thanked: 1587Well in Brisbane there are:
1. The Razor Shop in the Myer Center in the Queen Street Mall;
2. The Shaver Shop at Indooroopilly Westfield and Garden City Mt Gravatt.
They carry strops, a small selection of Dovo straights, soaps, creams, brushes, mugs, scuttles, styptic pencils etc. Generally a bit pricey (around 120AUD for a standard 5/8 plastic scaled Dovo) but they have the benefit, if you can get there, of instant gratification. Just don't expect to find out any worthwhile information from them about straights in general - none of the shopkeeps (with perhaps the exception of the old guy who owns the Razor Shop) have a clue. I think their standard straight-buying customer is generally someone after a 21st birthday gift for a mate or family member.

Hi Viola
Thanks for the welcome and the advice, Spike is now jealously guarding his "Sweeney" so I don't nick off with it!!
As he's just set himself up for straight shaving, I've been granted permission to use his strop, brush, bowl and soap (until I find something better) to tide me over, hehehe
I share the bane of having sensitive skin in certain parts too, with the added pain of being allergic to Lavendar which you do seem to find in lots of natural cosmetics. My everyday moisturiser is a handmade one from LUSH Fresh Handmade Soaps and Natural Cosmetics
It's called Celestial and smells fabulous. Main ingredients are vanilla, almond oil and milk and dove orchid extract. I find it perfect even after shaving, including "below the belt". But please let me know how you get on with Mama Bears stuff as it seems to come highly recommended and I love to try new things.
I'll be sure to head over to the BST and post a request as soon as I have figured out what I want (like every razor I have ever seen a picture of posted here!!)

Good Morning Ladies!
I just happened to be in the neighborhood and see we have two new lovely ladies on board. "Welcome" and Hello to you Pearl, and a big Hello to Siver. This is such a great place to hang out and you'll find lots of folks who are eager to share their experiences with both straights and DE's.
Mama Bear does indeed have some very fine shaving soaps, and WOW.....have you seen all those yummy flavors she has. You should be sure to check her out.

Hi Churley,
Thanks for welcoming us, it is especially good to hear from other ladies, but great to hear from then men too. Do you make soap? Thats great!!Anything for sensitive skin? and low chemical additive would be great. So if you don't make them... Do know where would? Mama Bear has gotten a good mention, so I'll try something from her range but I'm just wondering what you may reccomend too?
Thanks
Pearl

" I'm interested in trying to TM Combo Paddle Strop"
puck of William's soap (also at CVS) in a coffee mug and I can make pretty good lather out of it. I'm super excited about getting some products from Mama Bear though, as I have really sensitive skin. I just purchased the Merkur HD Double Edge razor, so I'll probably start using that on the days I can't use the straight razors... and I'll use it for my underarms right now. Anything we can do to help, just ask!
Thanks Viola for sharing that info with us
What makes you interested in a Paddle strop- whats the benefit? Is it becuase its always tight/straight so pulling required?
I take it that Williams soap is very generic shaving soap?

Welcome, Pearl
I'm not gonna pretend to tell you what you should shave your legs with, but I like a 6/8 or 7/8 half hollow spike myself. Everybody has their own preference and you'll likely have to try a few different razors yourself before you settle on something steady.
Glad to see you here,
X

Pearl, don't worry about the quote thing not working.
It's my birthday soon so I'm patiently waiting for my first razor but already have a feeling I've fallen prey to RAD, there are 2 or 3 on Steve's site that I have my eye on and as Spike got his from there mine will probably come from there too! Cash as ever is always the issue.
I'm also waiting for my next CSG session as I enjoyed it so much the first time, hehehehehe

Churley (Aka: Colleen) makes awesome soaps, as does Mama Bear, and both have soaps that are easy on sensitive skin.
Their Web sites are
Shaving, Bath and Body, Skincare, Home Fragrance, Brushes, Creams, Soaps
Home Page home made natural glycerin shaving soap, aftershave, bath soaps, colognes
Stick with the scents listed as having essential oils if you are sensitive, or just ask them to recommend something, they won't steer you wrong.
My advice would be to try a little of everything you can get your hands on.
Also, I'll make an offer to the ladies, (Ladies only guys, I don't care what color your dress is ) if you want to try my soap, PM me with your mailing info and I'll send out a free sample puck. (yes international too)
I currently only have one type of soap, and it was formulated for my own use... I use it probably twice a week, along with my favorites from Mama Bear and Colleen.
(this is a very limited time offer, I have to make it so, or risk giving away too much soap. So if you want a free sample, please PM me before the end of the day on 06/21/08, and I'll send out free samples. That includes you Colleen, and Mama Bear, if you want to try mine out and tell me what I'm doing wrong, I'm always open to suggestions )Last edited by Mike_ratliff; 06-14-2008 at 09:37 AM.
