As far as straights go I am the only one in my family so far. I gave my son a Genco when he came back from Army Basic but he is iffy on using it. I think he has a case of nerves about that piece of the Worlds Sharpest Steel next to his throat
For wet shaving my wife and daughter both use DE's so things like soap and cream are no issue. My poor Badger tho is getting a work out
I have to go find him a couple friends

OK bpave, I saw the razor your dad bought for you and all I can say is wow. Who knows, if RAD takes over my pops maybe I'll score a gift like that but I'm not holding my breath.
+1 on getting the dads into the straight shaving lifestyle. I think my father will enjoy some of the same elements you mentioned here. I sent him a link to the forum and maybe he'll get on. When I mentioned it today though, my mom said "he already spends to much time on the computer, don't give him another excuse" or something like that. I think I will post about our lesson tomorrow, probably in the shaving forum or maybe newbies corner, I haven't decided yet so keep a lookout.
Cheers,

I'm the only one i know, a workmate is thinking of trying one.
My wife doesn't really support it, she criticises the amount of things needed for it and time spent reading on this forum. She's like "it's just shaving get over it".

I'm the only one I know.
My father shaved all his life with a straight razor. I have 7 olders brothers and as far as I know, not one ever even tried a straight razor.
At 55 I am the youngest, so I don't think it's going to change.
It must be a calling, I guess
Good day !

My Dad used to use a DE when I was growing up, little does he know that we're planning on getting him a new DE and brush for christmas as he hasn't got a brush, he has a handle with stubble on it!!!
Not sure about the Grampy's, will have to check with the parents. I am the only one in my family that shaves with a straight, when I showed my brother my blade he pulled a face and said "I'll stick to my Mach III thanks!" I haven't stopped taking the p*** ever since.
The majority of my friends think I am completely off my rocker, but there are the odd one or two who think it's cool.
EDIT: Just spoke to my Mom and my Grandpa (her Dad) used to use a straight before he joined the RAF when he was 18. He was issued with a DE when he signed up. My Grandad used a DE right up until he retired when he stopped wet shaving all together and got himself an electric Braun thing.
I have a feeling my Grandpa would be proud that I use a straight, even though he may have thought it strange at first.Last edited by Silver; 09-17-2008 at 10:20 AM. Reason: Updating info

I'm the only one in my family to use a straight razor also.
Both my son and son-in-law use a DE, so that is at least progress.
My Aunt asked recently if there was anything family related I wanted after my Uncle passed away. I, of course, asked for any straight or DE razors. She was astonished that anyone still used either.
I have been fortunate to meet with some other straight users, one of whom lives just a few blocks from me and is a well known ebay seller.

Thanked: 31Aside from this forum, I don't know a single straight-razor shaver. I'm glad the forum is here, though. I don't feel so alone and lost! Oh, and my wife thinks I'm ridiculous for doing it, but she was OK with me buying the kit from kenrup, so aside from the eye roll I got when I told her I was able to finish all the passes in 40 minutes on Monday, there hasn't been any grief...

I have been trying to talk my dad into it for ages.. He actually bought a bunch of my old stuff from me, my first razor, strop, brush etc. Has tried it a few times but I think he still uses the electric day to day.
