Shavettes are for shaving legs.
Or was that the Chronik?
That being said, there are better ways to ask for advice.

The title to his post suggested a troll while the content seemed an honest expression of his frustration. If I had a forum to post on the the 1980s when I gave straight razor shaving a try I would have said pretty much the same thing he did. Glad I found SRP 20 years later.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Give the guy a break!
At least he posted and asked what the deal was, so it could be a lot worse.
And if by any chance he manages to stop all recruiting to straight shaving and scare away half of the guys who are shaving with a straight already, the prizes on straights on e-bay will go significantly down

Thanked: 131Hear hear! Lets not crucify the poor boy, eh? Some people just dont like learning to use a straight. Just cos he doesnt do it the way you do it doesnt mean we should verbally assault him! The guy was good enough to share his point of view. His first post suggests that he accepts that its only his opinion. Doesnt make it fact. If everyone else disagrees with him and thinks he should be hunted down..... would you seriously do that? No of course not because its just your opinion.
That said, if Jordan is right in his interpretation and adam IS using a shavette then I agree that he is drastically misjudging the situation. He is metaphorically taking a sip of Doctor Pepper and saying that all soft drinks taste horrible.

If it was indeed a shavette the lad used for his first time .. I'm not surprised over his first impressions . My first two attempts were with a shavette type razor and I did nick myself pretty bad .. I'd already joined SRP but hadn't posted anything , in hindsight I really should have and no doubt I'd have been advised to try the real deal instead
Sydney .. Dr Pepper is the greatest soft drink outside of Scotland (irn-bru )

Thanked: 278I suggest you view all of matic59's videos on YouTube.
YouTube - Introduction to Traditional Wetshaving, Part 1: Concepts
YouTube - mantic59's Channel
They contain useful information relevant to shaving with straight, safety, and yes, even cartridge razors.
Pay particular attention to what he says about ENJOYING a shave.
He is mainly talking about safety (DE) razors, but I think his philosophy transfers well to straight shaving.
At the very least I think you should give safety (DE) razors a try. Every bit as good as cartridge razors but much cheaper.
Maybe save the cartridge razor for when you are late for work and need a 3-minute-start-to-finish shave.

Before shaving with straights, I was shaving with Bic "Good News" and lathering up with a brush and shaving soap. I did not have any technique other than one pass with the grain.
Luckily I came across this site and did some research before buying a reasonably priced, shave ready, straight razor from Tony Miller. I also watched a couple of videos on shaving technique before attempting to shave with the straight razor. Once I got over the creeps while shaving ever so close to my carotid artery the shaves continually got better. I am now to the point where my shaves are very close, nick free and very enjoyable.
I still keep a couple of disposables around for travel when all I am bringing are carry-ons, and for the occasion where I am running late and a rush job will not be the relaxing and rewarding ritual that shaving has become. On those occasions I now apply the techniques that I have learned from straight razor shaving and know that I am getting a better, closer shave than I did before really learning to shave. What Adam says is true about safety razors being quicker and maybe safer in those instances where speed is required, but to me that is not what shaving is about.
His title is abusive, he seems sincere in his post, but one earmark of a Troll is to stir it up and watch without further interaction.

Hi Adam,
Actually you're not using a straight, you're using a disposable (albeit one that bears some resemblance to a straight) and since I've never used one of those , I can't really comment on its performance in your hands. As to trying to prove you wrong, how can we? This is a talkboard not real life, all we can show you is the consensus of this board and the reasoning behind that. If you're happier with the shave you were getting with whatever you were using before and find that your experience contradicts the consensus and reasoning of most (all?) of us here, carry on using whatever you were before.
