If you go with a shavette type razor don't make light of the guard. If you're going to use one for your 1st shave you might want to use it. I think of it as training wheels on a bike. Sure they look unsophisticated but the also stop you from splitting your head open. They're the same as a bar on a single edged-safety razor.
