Too much of a good thing is no good. if you took a great edge and put it under a sufficiently high magnification the edge will look like the surface of the moon.
I mostly use a quality loupe which is 36x and thats as high as I need. I have a stereo microscope which goes to about 86x and is super quality and personally I think its overkill. No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

I have to agree with Nelson here, 20 30x with a loupe is fine. When you get into 200x magnification, you don't even want to shave any more. I don't really see the benefit of it, other that it's cool, and unless maybe your a metalurgist. Just my opinion, no offense to you USB guys out there.

Thanked: 278I've taken a risk and bought these:
30x +20x10x Jewelers Eye Loupes Magnifier for Jewellery - eBay (item 110377903212 end time Apr-19-09 11:30:00 PDT)
They seem identical to much more expensive items found at:
QUICKTEST Loupes from £20.00 upwards
They could be cheap knockoffs, but even the spelling mistake is the same, and at the price of 6 Euros they will probably be worth it either way.

Thanked: 156Interesting. What a huge price difference. Either case, you get what you pay for. Except in the case of quicktest. I've seen these on amazon for $5.00 shipped. Or $10, can't remember.

microchips are stress risers. I think. chips beget chips. In the quest for strong, long lasting edges that are sharrrp
You need to know what's there.
If you are only honing once a year and easily wiping whiskers off your face daily, one might safely assume there is nothing there at all.
All I know about loupes is I want one. I think I want a high quality, big around one.
I only have one way to look, so i don't know if 20 or 30 is enough. I realize the RS is limited compared to high quality scopes but it can give a good reflection of what is going on I mostly use 70-80x range with different angles and lighting when I feel like looking hard.
With a 20, 30x loupe can you see shave damage on the edge , then repaired by the strop? that's probably good enough then

I have a Zeiss which is actually two that mate together 12x and 24x making 36x. You can check out edmunds scientifics. They have a variety of reasonable magnifiers and if you want the really good stuff Deutsch Optik has those.
You know its funny. people buy a hone and decide they can't get a good edge so they buy more thinking finer hones will do some magic for them instead of getting the max from what they have. Optics are the same. people buy increasing mag thinking that's the key instead of getting the max resolution from something lower in power. If you want to see everything you could get an SEM. For most of us the lower power will show you everything you need to see as long as its quality.Last edited by thebigspendur; 04-17-2009 at 03:45 PM.
