I did initially do it directly after the thumbnail, but caught myself and did it straight from the stone the next time.
I think maybe it's just going to take a while on the stone. I was going about it wrong before, and the tips JoeD gave me have made a world of difference.
Considering improper technique, I've really only tried to hone it once. The first 2 times don't count.
Now that the bevel is even, I think I'll be able to get it sharp. I was just getting it to bite into my thumbnail evenly towards the end of last nights session, so I probably just didn't give myself enough time. I'm persistent, but I have a short fuse. I will see this through to the end...I'll just rant, rave, and curse the whole way there.
