I'd like to comment on this, but I'm sure my better half would not appreciate it.

This reminds me of an old joke...

This newlywed couple is in the hotel rooom on the big night, and they're of course excited as all get out, but when they get off their clothes the man decides it's time he set some "ground rules." he hands his wife his pants and says "Put those on." So she thinks "Ummm...kinky, but ok..." and pulls them up. But they're just too big and no matter what she does, they keep falling down. Finally she says, "now, these are just too dang big. I can't wear them!"

He grins and says "That's right. In this marriage, I'm the man, I wear the pants and don't you forget it!"

"Well now!" she says, smiling. "I believe I understand!" So she takes off her panties and hands them to her husband. "Try putting those on, sailor." Mollified by the smile and gentle reaction, he decides to humor her, but no matter what he does, he can't get the panties up past his knees.
"Dammit, I can't get into these!" He says, giving up.

"That's right," she says, and grins. "And if you don't straighten up that attitude, you never will!"

My wife knows that anything I buy is either half price or on special at practically cost. (must be the scottish gene I inherited from my grandfather) So if I,ve got the money I can buy it.

My approach runs a tad different. She stays home and makes the little ones into normal human beings, and since I have no reference point to do that, I go to work and fund the activities here. Somewhere along the line in the last 15 years she's decided that since I'm making all the money then I'm responsible enough to manage it. HA! Well, OK, I guess mostly I can do that....

I'd love to brag that I'd pre-planned how to get her disinterested in the packages that show up, but honestly I just sort of Forest Gump-ed it. I've completely burned her out using RAD by showing her every soap, cream, brush, strop, and blade that's arrived. At this point she can tell a Latigo from an SRD Premium I. By the arrival of about the 50th box there was a complete lack of curiosity from her.

As a result of a tiny bit of guilt about having so much fun with all this, I found myself really curious about my wife's quilting. I started to ask a bunch of honest technical questions about it all and that seems to have sealed the deal. (Apparently there's a RAD equivalent in the quilting world and it involves "half blocks" of materials). Nowadays whenever I show her a new acquisition, she appears interested, but a few minutes later she shows me a few pieces of cloth sewn together and points out the exactness of how they all touch at a point. Then she reminds me that we each need at least one individual hobby.... Ding ding ding ding!!!!

She does still take a keen interest in the scent of soaps and creams but aside from that it's now simply "some obsession" that I'm into. I overheard her telling a neighbor lady at a party a few weeks ago that it's not all that expensive, and it's a much better obsession than me developing the habit of heavy drinking and chasing other women.

Heeeeey - I think I may have been outfoxed somehow... :-)

Threads like these always make me wonder if people even like the women they married.

I like mine....so I just don't go out and buy stuff like that....just like she won't go out and buy a crapload of clothing or babystuff.

I have a career and make my own money. My wife has a career and makes her own money. We each buy whatever the hell we want and almost never discuss it with eachother.

I don't discuss my razor purchases with her anymore than she discusses all the makeup she buys with me. (and I can assure you, she spends FAR FAR more on makeup than I ever will on razors)

But in the end, each of us in answerable only to ourself.

Since I do not use p@yp@l or buy things on line it leaves me with local antique stores and flea market and garage sales. She is there with me when most of my purchases have been made.
I also do not pay high prices for my razors and would rather have a fix me upper and fix it up. She has no problems thus far with my 50+ razors that have been acquired, and I think she puts it off as another one of my hobbies.
I will look at Cr@igslist, and have found some there, but internet buying for me is out of the question. I have bought 2 razors online, one new Dovo, and a lovely Clauss from a member here. Other than that internet sales are just to tempting and easy, plus I like to look at them before buying.

I have a similar arrangement. I don't mind her buying a $250 pair of shoes and she doesn't mind me buying a $250 video card. Or, more recently, $200 worth of razor-sharpening rocks.

I try to keep my purchases below $20 or $30 if the purchase is above $30 I have to meet with SWMBO and make sure that we can budget for it. If we can great if not, oh well.

Sometimes I can raise money outside of the budget then as long as the kids are set I go ahead.

Family first, razors second. You can find alot in the antique stores for $20 - $30.
