Flew out to El Paso, put my zippo into my checked bag, since you can't carry them on board any longer. Had no problems, came back, El Paso airport removed it, and put a not stating that they did. I don't remember the law saying you couldn't carry it in checked baggage.

Yeah, that's one of their new ways to piss off the entire smoking public. No lighters can be carried on your person, carry-on, or checked baggage. In the case of Richard Reid (the Atlantic shoe bomber that just couldn't get that fuse to light), I can understand parts 1 & 2. However, there must be some new security risk causing lighters to spontaneously combust at altitude.
Personally, I think it's a way to generate more revenue selling lighters at the airport.

Unlike a regular str8, you can take a Shavette in your carry-on as long as you put the blades in your checked luggage.

I would never fly with my str9s. You'll have to put it in the checked luggage and you're just asking for it to be stolen.

I remember laying it in a specific spot at my friend's house, meaning to put it in the luggage later. It either got misplaced in KS or was taken from the luggage. : (

I flew down to Myrtle Beach two months ago and had my str8 in my checked bag. No problem coming or going.

Whenever I fly and have "weird things with me, I make sure that they note this down when checking in.

I started doing this when, about 14 years ago, I started taking a mini coffeemaker with me on my trips. Plastic, wiring and metal were never taken lightly in certain combinations, but they have never opened my luggage nor was anything ever removed.
